Jackson Rathbone's Travel Hazards
By Jackson Rathbone

The actor Jackson Rathbone stars in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1, in theaters now, and the web series, Aim High, which he co-produced with McG. Next year, he will head back out on tour with his band, 100 Monkeys. Here, her writes about how her got that black eye as part of our Winter Issue's Travel Tales feature
We'll be posting more travel pieces by everyone from Momofuku pastry chef Christina Tosi to Lady Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti. You can read about Sasha Grey's trip to Thailand and Germany here.
It was the spring of 2010 and I was in love. The girl who had stolen my heart was a black 2006 custom Gibson Les Paul. We had met in the City of Angels on my 25th birthday. She wanted to come home with me, and I could tell this would be more than a one-night stand. This was love -- not my first -- but the last in a long line of broken strings and humbuckers. Our love was electric. She sang to me, and I knew her name was Betty.
I had been on the road with my band, 100 Monkeys, playing shows across North America. On this leg of the tour, we were playing dive bars and juke joints, caravanning with a small trailer lugged by an old Ford van, followed by a small white Scion xB. It wasn't luxurious by any means, but we were able to connect with our fans on a personal level.
The end of the tour brought 100 Monkeys back to our home state of California, to San Francisco specifically. We had one day off to explore the city, but we spent it in a dingy rehearsal space near the main piers on the industrial side of town. We were writing new songs for our return to Los Angeles in preparation for our future album, Liquid Zoo. After all, music was why we were there, and we had already driven by the famous Haight-Ashbury, now home to a Gap. We preferred to keep playing as opposed to sightseeing.
After rehearsal, we began unloading in a rather disorderly fashion -- joking, sipping beers and passing back instruments and gear, which we lined up along a dimly-lit, one-way alley. I was humming the still half-written lyrics for our future song "Prayer," while directing our tour manager as he backed the van-trailer through the narrow street. Though I was on "night watch" duty, I (admittedly) lost focus of our precious instruments and gear. I would soon learn to never ever make that mistake again. My beloved Betty was gone.
I was in a panic, my senses fully alert. I could taste the salty San Franciscan air, polluted with sticky-sweet carbon dioxide, and my own fear. I could smell the bay, miles away, lapping against the shoreline like an excited Jack Russell terrier. Then, from the corner of my eye, I saw a shadow. I turned: "Hey!" A singular exclamation that meant: "You son of a bitch! That's my guitar! Get your ass back here before I cut off your sticky fingers and shove them so deeply into every known orifice that your parents will reel back and choose to never consummate that moment of lust years ago when you were merely a swimming little spunk in your father's left testicle!"
The shadowy figure started running, and so did I.
There are moments you will always remember, and then there are moments when you awaken flying through the air in a fury of righteous anger and indignation, where physical bodies impact much like comets in the cosmos, exploding upon impact, each chipping away at the other and wrestling over a freshly painted guitar case containing a sleeping object of ebony, mahogany and my bleeding, beating heart. I tackled the shadow and it swung back, wild with elbows and fists. My hands bit into concrete to cushion my fall. I held onto the guitar case amidst the writhing and the swinging limbs, as blood began to flow from my temple. Suddenly, the shadow was gone. I began to breathe again. I was alone with my love in my arms.

Jackson, this is so well written and exciting to read. No doubt this story telling talent serves you well with song writing. I’m glad this love story had a happy ending.

He is not only such a talented musician, actor and photographer, but a talented writer as well. This, I have known from reading his poetry years ago, but it's something I am pleased to re-realize once again.
I knew the story of the black eye, but I never knew it told like this... So eloquent and reverent.

I love him cause he's the most authentic of 'em all.

Very good story I was sitting on the edge So glad you got your Betty back. You should make a movie out of it. It is said that Ron Howard only needs a picture, you are far more original @ hip than him. I will be waiting for the movie to come out!

Nice, I knew that you could write. Keep it up! Seeing the picture was a little upsetting, but the things we do for the ones we love is always a dangerous proposition. One must watch out for all the things on a tour! Love the writings keep acting and singing!!

Doesn't really hit me as much of a travel piece. Kinda self-indulgent tripe, really. And I would know. I pump it out all the time :D
P.S. That Gap got kicked out years ago. Good riddance, but I mean, how many smoke shops does one street need before it begins to get a bit redundant?

He looks hot beat up lol

Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
This is a most excellent article Jax! I am
glad you prevailed and got your love back! I would caution you however to be less impulsive in the future! Dean would be most upset if you were to never return to him. :( The world would miss you as well! (hope I don't sound like too much of a mom!)
Please please keep writing!
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
I loved the way you wrote the article, how you tell the story is fantastic. The best part of it is that you let us see how much you love and respect music. The sweetest thing is that you named ur guitar as Betty, that's trully wonderfull for me, I mean, musical instruments have soul, they got life. Thanks for sharing this. :)
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
I absolutely loved how descriptive you were. This is truly a great piece of work. Completely Brilliant and I'm glad you got your Betty back! Bravo!
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
Aww, nothing can keep true love apart!
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
Very well written and entertaining. From te very first paragraph detailing your hot and heavy new romance, My Best Girl by Lucero lodged itself firmly in my head. It'll probably be there all night but s'all good cause it's a pretty kickass song.
I love that you took such a story-teller route with this and strongly suggest that you do it more often. Also, the translation of "Hey!" got an audible giggle-snort type of laugh out of me. Well done, sir =)
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
And "hey" gets its own thought bubble. LOL
Great piece! More please!!
Posted at 10:52 on Dec 22, 2011
Jackson, what a great story! You're definately a writer, must be the musician in you. Hopefully we'll be seeing more stories from you. I'm sorry to see your handsome face injured, but it was done in the name of love!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
LOL!
Well, that's quite a romantic story!
I love the way you tell it, making it heartfelt and funny at the same time... (I sure hope that was your intention!).
Stupid thing to do though, going after someone like this. Could have been hurt! And your fans would like that now would they? :-)
Hope your love had some talent in dressing wounds...:P
Sorry if I "sound" a bit weird (hey! Here I am picturing myself as a guitar! I wonder why that is...). Since I usually "play" in french, my english is a bit out of tune.
Keep writing!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
I love it, great story. I want to read more!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
Excellent job kiddo, you are gifted in all forms of communication be it music, producing, acting, photography, writing or just talking honestly with your friends and fans. GOD has gifted you, use them all and often.

Wow. your very good at writting and grabbing the reader to make them want to finsh. great job!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
Having heard the lyrics you write there's no way you should never doubt your talent for writing and this just proves, in all it's forms. I hope you do write more of this stuff, I'll read it in a heartbeat!!!!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
Well that finally answers the question, "How did Jackson get the black eye?" LOL Nicely written with the passion you display in everything you do. I am glad you recovered your love.
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
Glad you got your "Betty" back...and I finally got an answer to my "Why didn't Jackson ever take off his sunglasses at the Stockton show?" question answered!!! That was my first (of many) time seeing 100 Monkeys and it was beyond awesome!!
Posted at 10:53 on Dec 22, 2011
Very nice Jackson! I highly enjoyed it. Is there anything you can't do? You are a very talented individual and I look forward to more things fron you. Much love.
Posted at 10:54 on Dec 22, 2011
Vivid descriptions. I could feel what you felt. Calling someone "a swimming little spunk in your fathers left testicle" is priceless. I may have to store that for future use. Thank you for sharing. I sincerely hope you continue to write. I would love to read more.
Posted at 10:54 on Dec 22, 2011
Awesome! Purely awesome, you told the story beautifully, it captivated me!
Posted at 10:54 on Dec 22, 2011
lmao. a beaut of a story if i've ever heard one :P
Posted at 10:54 on Dec 22, 2011
You have a very 'novel' style... writing so formally... excellent word skills... a bit like 'Edward' really... what don't you do well... I'm glad you got your guitar back... =)♥
Posted at 10:54 on Dec 22, 2011
Wow. You can hurl some crazy, creative,(and deserved!)curses. What kind of villain steals a man's guitar? Thank goodness you got Betty back.
Please write more about your travels! You and the 100 Monkeys seem like you are always having so much fun.
Plus, this was an epically classic story. Boy loves girl, girl gets stolen away by a heinous interloper, boy rescues girl, and they make beautiful music together.
Posted at 10:58 on Dec 22, 2011
Your guitar is one lucky girl!
Posted at 10:58 on Dec 22, 2011
Jackson, thank you for taking us through such a wild adventure! So well written! We would love to read an entire book from you someday. The way you see things and transfer them into words and a story, is such a delight to read! You must write more - period. First your poetry, then lyrics and now this. Perfect :)
We remember seeing you at a show in LA with that shiner- wow we had no idea... Here's to true love! You'll be Betty's hero for life ;)
Posted at 10:58 on Dec 22, 2011
That was beautiful, Jackson! The language is exquisite and the storyline is quite enticing. You should definitely write more. I remember reading some of your poems on the 100 Monkeys Myspace page and they were phenomenal. Keep it up :)
P.s. I hope you had a wonderful birthday!
Katie

wow that's all i can really say to that you had me hooked from the start at the edge of my seat, i was like NOOOO not Betty lol but i'm glad you got her back in the end. Your a great writer/actor/musician and i look forward to seeing more stuff from you.
Posted at 10:59 on Dec 22, 2011
I’m really impressed with the way you manipulate the written word. I got a kick out of your explanation behind what you actually meant when you said “Hey”.
Posted at 11:00 on Dec 22, 2011
The article is written well. The emotion is warm, soft, and heartfelt. I like how you've taken the time to describe the humor, and strength with the way you care about Betty. It also has an abundance of adjectives as far as the way its written. I'm sure there will be more where this one came from. I've written in the past too, but haven't had it published, I criticize myself too much.
Posted at 11:00 on Dec 22, 2011
Wow Jackson, this is really great!! I could envision every little detail of your story. Some just talk and you have to use your own imagination how it would look, but you put us right in the drivers seat. Thank you for sharing and I hope we get to read more from you. Glad your eye is better!! Merry Christmas my friend. Please tell the other guys I hope they have a very merry christmas also.
Posted at 11:00 on Dec 22, 2011
Wow this was an amazing piece of writing Jackson, really great story. Keep it up! :)

Jackson I loved this. I think it showed us a personal side of you that we probably don't get to see much. i would personally love to read more of your travel tales. I wish you the best of luck with your acting, the band, and writing. I think you are good at what ever you set your mind to do.

Definitely hook me. Amazing writer and can't wait to read more!
Posted at 11:01 on Dec 22, 2011
Your first self-written article is beautiful and the story is very captivating and entertaining, and I really enjoy your "Heys" whether it's mean to say "hey darlin'" or "You son of a bitch! That's my guitar! Get your ass back here before I cut off your sticky fingers and shove them so deeply into every known orifice that your parents will reel back and choose to never consummate that moment of lust years ago when you were merely a swimming little spunk in your father's left testicle!" That really made my night... you are an awesome actor, musician and writer. Much Love and Respect. Xoxo-Amelia
Posted at 11:02 on Dec 22, 2011
Omg! I'm glad you got Betty back, Jackson! That explanation of hey was pretty hilarious but admittedly appropriate. What was that s.o.b thinking?! Can't wait to read more from you Jackson! :) this article was so well written! I could see it happening in my head as I read it! Love it! :)
Posted at 11:02 on Dec 22, 2011
Jackson, what can't you do? You are very talented and I am so glad you are willing to share that with all of us. Kudos.
Posted at 11:02 on Dec 22, 2011
Jackson, you're absolutely brilliant in all that you do. I must say, you definitely rocked the black eye for the rest of that tour.. a badge of honor, if I must say so myself..
Let that be a lesson to all who try to come between a musician and his/her instruments.. never try to pry them apart.. you will go down swinging and you'll get hurt and run away scared of said musician beating you up.
Glad you rescued your Gibson and you only received a black eye. Could've been much worse.
Jackson Rathbone = 1
Guitar Stealer = 0.
Please write more, and hopefully the stories won't be so far apart.
Posted at 11:03 on Dec 22, 2011
Dude you got into a right with who knows what over a guitar? Not smart! The mom in me says the guitar can be replaced but you cannot......
Posted at 11:03 on Dec 22, 2011
Is there anything Jackson Rathbone can't do? He's a triple (more actually) acting, musical genius, and a brilliant writer. Damn good looking to boot. I'm even more smitten now.
Posted at 11:03 on Dec 22, 2011
That was awesome! Is there a book in your near future? I would so read it!

Posted at 11:06 on Dec 22, 2011
Sorry that you got hurt, but every musician I have ever met at concerts always say their instruments are either their loves or their best friends. Maybe that guy will think twice beforehe tries to steal somehong else!
Not only is the story well written, but it makes the reader feel as if we are chasing right along with you.

Very, very good. You have a flair for the written word, Jackson. I would love to read more stories from you, should they be true stories or fiction. Keep up the good work, my friend.

Well written. Grabbed you reader's attention and held it all the way through. You also did well evoking emotions. Would love to see more of your writing skills.

Holy crap Jackson! You REALLY love that guitar! I'm glad you didn't let the cretin have it! And I have to say, your brow-beaten, uh, brow is kinda sexy! I liked the article, but you could use a beta (I'd be happy to offer my services); there are a few grammatical errors, but otherwise it's a good article. I wish you the best of luck - looking forward to hearing Betty in the background on Liquid Zoo!

There are a few run on sentences and unnecessary "fluff," which occurs frequently in personal stories to emphasize the writers emotion. Honestly, I think it's good for your first article. It could be better but I imagine, in time, it will be. Love your music! Keep on rockin' and writin'!! -Katie

Love the story. Happy you were able to save Betty from the horriable person, and that you weren't seriously hurt in any way. Hope she was unharmed in the altercation. You have such a way with words. You were given a talent with writing, acting, and singing

Jackson,
First be advised that not all are going to like your work, but no matter what anyone says it's YOUR work and it is authentic and more importantly it's from your heart so that means more than any review that can be given.
Now I personally liked the piece because once again it was authentic, I liked the fact that you took the time to show the scenery around you and other bits and pieces, that gave my imagination something to see...I would love to see more of this..you should start a blog of some sorts...

From someone who loves reading but knows little about the art of writing a great story: I really enjoyed this so thank you for writing it! You have an amazing talent for story telling and I feel that this story will stick in my memory because of the way it was told. While reading this I felt immediately engaged and almost as though I could see you there. I also enjoyed the bit of humor you threw in.
I sincerely hope you write more!

You gave a great description of the setting and your feelings at those moments I could pull the scene in my mind with smells and taste.I did laugh at your plans for sticky fingers and his fingers. It was good so keep at it..

Great, classic love story. Boy meets girl and falls in love. Boy takes girl on a road trip. Boy nearly loses girl in a dark alley but fights to get her back. I love it. Good job, Jackson. You've proven yourself to be an artist with your music and acting and now with your writing as well. Your words paint such a clear picture; it's entertaining. I hope for a chance to read more from you. It's clear you're not just another pretty face... well, a pretty face with a black eye.

I was very happy to hear how passionate you were about your guitar, and even happier to hear that you got it back. I loved the sentence that started off the last paragraph and even had to repeat it slowly to the people in the room. I hope you continue writing and keep on smiling.

Loved the story, so glad that it had a somewhat happy ending. So not only is Jackson a talented singer, songwriter, and actor but now also a story teller. His writing made me feel like I was experiencing it for myself. So Jackson is in love with Betty and it sounds like I might need to change my name to Betty and get some loving from Jackson. Would love to read more travel pieces from Jackson he has quite a way with words that made me laugh out loud literally at work which had my co-workers looking at me strangely till I made them read his piece. Jackson keep up your writing and compile them into a short novel of all the hijinks that you and the rest of the band get into while on your for us all to read.
Posted at 11:26 on Dec 22, 2011
Interesting story! I loved your descriptions. I especially enjoyed your desc of "hey" we've all had those moments and it made me laugh. Hope to see more!
Posted at 11:26 on Dec 22, 2011
I have to say man, great job on getting a single syllable to get across a whole different message entirely. I wasn't aware that was quite possible. You did a really awesome job with this piece, hope to see more in the future. Not everyone can take a potentially boring piece and turn it into something entertaining, funny and informational. You deserve an A+, my fellow.

Captivating! Jackson has the amazing ability to capture the reader's (or listener's) interest and keep him/her engaged and on edge. Thanks Jackson for sharing the experience! I would love to read your take on the impromptu concert at the duck pin bowling alley. That was my favorite moment from your 2010 tour.

Jackson you did a wonderful job and it kept me captivated. It was funny, romantic, and joyous. It made me laugh. It made me nearly cry...(nearly...LOL). Seriously...I loved it. You did a terrific job and can't wait to read more.

That pic looks like it was taken while you still had adrenalin pumping in your veins. Not the wisest thing to do, but don't you love that you gave into instinct, wrestled like a wildcat and won? Amazing story. Love the "film noir" tone.

Well written. You found the humor in an dangerous situation. I was scared and amused at the same time. As a retired security officer I am relieved you were not left with a lifetime disability from the altercation and am happy you retrieved your "Betty"
In the future please try and remember that you are irreplaceable so please leave the pursuit of criminals to those that get paid to do it. Get a bodyguard if you don't already have one.
On Nov. 8th 1995 my daughter Connie was just 21 and working the night shift at an AM/PM on 38th and Pine in Tacoma WA. A man came in the store, he had a gun,,,he ordered her to give him the money out of the till ($250) then ordered her out the back door of the store. He assaulted her then shot her in the leg and head and left her for dead on the Fort Lewis Golf course. She survived and is high functioning brain damaged. AM/PM (L&I) awarded her $65,000 for the loss of her right temporal lobe of her brain. She lives in poverty, in a rodent infested trailer with a slum lord that will not pay for repairs. So the moral of this my story is "Please do not put yourself in harms way and carry a damn gun."
Posted at 11:42 on Dec 22, 2011
Jackson, it's amazing the way you write the story. That shows the incredible writer that you are, either to the songs like to tell stories. I'm so glad that this story of Betty and you have had a happy ending.
I'm so proud of you, because you showed to be a man who fights [literally] for what you want and loves.
I'm not good writer, therefore, I feel that opaque your wonderful way of writing, hahaha.
So... the only thing that I say is: I admire you and love you, and (again) I'm so proud of you, proud of what you are.
Posted at 11:42 on Dec 22, 2011
Impeccable piece.
Started blatantly nostalgic... informative without too much over-sharing.
I applaud the part where you seem cynically disdainful.
Here's hoping for more...
Posted at 11:44 on Dec 22, 2011
This was a thrill to read! I was holding mu breath at the end! Pls write more!
Posted at 11:44 on Dec 22, 2011
I was at one of those shows. That show completely knocked me out of ym comfort zone and dumped me into the middle of some of the most amazing music I have ever heard. The energy was fun and even a white girl with no rhythm danced. Thankfully it was dark so no one saw.
Clearly music and acting aren't your only gifts. This was wonderful, eloquent, witty, and funny. Oh to be a fly on the wall for this.
Glad your love is safe.
Posted at 11:45 on Dec 22, 2011
OGM! this is just another thing to add to your talents Jackson, very good writing and I love to see more of this, so keep it up!

Posted at 11:50 on Dec 22, 2011
Your writing put me in the moment with you - I could feel the despair when you lost, and the excitement when you found, your love. I hope that you are able to write more - and I look forward to reading more. Job very well done.

Posted at 11:54 on Dec 22, 2011
That is a great article of work. I read this with great desire to read every word as the clear images of your trist were going through my mind. I really enjoyed reading this like a good cup of coffee you discover you have drank to fast and wished there was more.

Truly a girl worth saving....
Well written!
.... I may need to borrow your version of "Hey!"
Posted at 11:57 on Dec 22, 2011
I feel unfulfilled. What a fabulous tale, but I would have liked more--more everything; more detail, more length, more introspection. I would have liked to see that struggle in my mind's eye like it was pulled taffy. You have a gift with words, but I'm a greedy creature and I want more. (That, in case you haven't realized, is a good thing.)
Posted at 11:57 on Dec 22, 2011
Hell of a backstory...left testicle to guitar thief. One question though...Why the left testicle? :) Just kidding. Letting someone read your writing is a very intimate thing; much like writing song lyrics, I'm assuming. I appreciated the opportunity to be a part of an extremely private and emotional moment in your life. Thanks for letting me into your head. Love to hear more.
Posted at 12:02 on Dec 23, 2011
Music and Spirit are the truest forms of love, Passion adds a little lust. ;-) Glad your Betty remained with you as you continue your journey.
Remember, "Without music, life would be a mistake." - Nietzsche
You should also continue to write!
Posted at 12:02 on Dec 23, 2011
It's very well written though a little hard to follow because you wrote it from ur pov when most articles are written third person. It is very disturbing that someone would have. The nerve to do that to you or any famous person but its unfortunaly a fact of life. I hope you heal well and if you already have great to hear it. (Maybe I missed it but it would've been nice to have a time frame) good luck many blessings and keep up all ur talents!
Posted at 12:03 on Dec 23, 2011
Great job Jax!
Posted at 12:06 on Dec 23, 2011
You have a very seductive way of writing, You should write a book of poetry, I would be the first to buy it, and I loved how you described the word "HEY" . You have an amazing gift. Btw that black eye was hot!
Posted at 12:06 on Dec 23, 2011
Jackson, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. I am impressed, and I didn't realize prior to this article that you had a band. I will certainly check your music out and no doubt become a fan and a happy woman. I hope to check your band out live in the near future. I pray you all stay safe and find many blessings through your tour and music along the way. I loved your character in all of the released twilight movies; I especially look forward to seeing Breaking Dawn, Part 2. If there is such a thing, I am team Jasper and Alice. It isn't all about Bella, Edward and Jacob. There is something to be said about great characters played by fabulous actors, that aren't always the center of attention. You both did a beautiful job, congratulations on the success of the movies. I pray you have much success in your future endeavors. God bless you.

What an inspiring love story you've written here. The personification of your beautiful lady, Betty, was wonderfully written. Thanks for sharing your passion with us, Jackson. You truly are one of a kind, and a gift to other art lovers.
This story brings truth to the myth: "love conquers all." (Even sticky fingered guitar gankers) I'm so glad you saved your sweetheart, so that y'all can continue to share your amazing music with the world.

I would love to read more. I do hope you write and publish some more!

Incredibly well written, one of the best short stories I've ever read and "up there" with the big names of the profession. Please, Sir, more!!!!!
Posted at 12:31 on Dec 23, 2011
That was really well written. Your descriptions just leapt off the pages and when it ended I was like Hey!! Which is the universal word meaning damn I want more. Your talent knows no bounds
Posted at 12:32 on Dec 23, 2011
Wow Jackson, this is good! You really know how to write. You're talented in many ways, love ya :)
Posted at 12:34 on Dec 23, 2011
From one writer to another, you've got quite a way with words! Your description pulled me right in to the story and I even winced at the end when you fell to the concrete.
Great job! The things we do for our passions, talk about suffering for your art! You can even take a deeper look at the story and not only is it about you fighting for a physical object that means the world to you, but you also fought for something greater, you fought for your passion, your talent, and your dreams. Very inspiring indeed.
I hope you write more in the future because you've got a unique point of view that is hard to find these days.
Posted at 12:34 on Dec 23, 2011

Mr Rathbone,
this was a great piece of writing.
I can haz more now?
Posted at 12:40 on Dec 23, 2011
There is an error in the intro
"Here, her writes about how her got that black eye as part of our Winter Issue's Travel Tales..." should read here, he writes about how he got the black eye....
It is too to bad that your car was stolen, however I did enjoy reading your adventure.
Posted at 12:42 on Dec 23, 2011
Wow. That's really all I can say.
You have a wonderful way of describing things! I could almost see the scene you were describing.
Posted at 12:44 on Dec 23, 2011

Thank you, Jackson, your story sort of bewitched me :) and didn't let me go till the very end... glad it was a happy end, and you were alive and with your "love in your arms"!
Your writing is off the beaten line and captivating, indeed!
I will translate your article into russian so that my friends could read it, if you don't mind!
And please-please, be safe, have a care!)

LOL, this is very well written. I have to admit, I kind of a bit jealous on the "I was in love" part. I never knew it turn out to be a guitar :D. But the story is well written, It's silly, simple, but simply will put smile on everyone's faces that read it.
And....even with your disheveled hair and cut on your face, yo do still look hot and handsome...
Cheers

I do hope Betty survived the ordeal with no trauma or injury :)

This is amazing. It is exceptionally well written. Your emotions carriaes through to the reader. This effect allows the reader to see the story as if they were present, as if they were an unseen observer. Again this is an amazing piece of work.

Very well written. Story was very entertaining and kept the reader wanting more. Would be great if you would think about writing a script for a movie. Love your work, both writing and in the movies.

I am in awe of your writing skills Mr. Jackson Rathbone. I felt like I was actually seeing all of this take place rather then reading it. Not jus seeing it but feeling it and tasting it! You have a way with words.

I love it! This is very well written. I can actually see this happening. Thank you for sharing. I love the fact that you took something so serious and put a rather humorous tone to it!
Posted at 1:22 on Dec 23, 2011
Written like a poet writes. Vivid descriptions ("a long line of broken strings and humbuckers" echoes m/f relationships nicely, "guitar case containing a sleeping object of ebony, mahogany and my bleeding, beating heart" is particularly effective). The "hey"-that-meant line is very clever. It might work better if it stuck with just one of the images involved. The switch in idea diverts the line of thought rather abruptly and disrupts the build-up to the fight. Smart concept. Engages and moves the reader emotionally. Good work.
Posted at 1:23 on Dec 23, 2011
That was great stuff there. I wish I wrote that good. You sure are a talented one Mr. Rathbone. Don't stop writing (nor acting and singing).

I did enjoy reading this though i'm not usually one for short stories. Very descriptive and captivating. I believe its hard to make an attempted robbery sound so poetic but you have accomplished that quite successfully! Intriguing stuff.

and how in the hell did you make a ass kickin' knock-down-drag-out fight sound like the best soul connecting sex ever?...thoust truly be talented; The force is strong with this one!

Have a great New Year, and may all of God's blessings be upon you. Be safe. Good luck with your next tour. Love the music you all make, and happy writing.

PS: Loved you and the whole cast in the "Twilight" series. I am a great-grandma baby boomer, and have been watching vampire/werewolf movies since the first ones came out in black and white. I really liked this series of movies the best. Thanks.

Good written.
Will you and 100 Monkeys come back to Sweden? :)
Posted at 2:10 on Dec 23, 2011
This was writing at it’s best; I went through a wide range of emotions as I read; I fell in love, felt scared, angry, and relief. Many people can write a story but a very few can make their audience feel as though they where there or had some part in the story, you my friend are among that very few :)

Hey it sounds good, but I could do with out these two sentences: I could taste the salty San Franciscan air, polluted with sticky-sweet carbon dioxide, and my own fear. I could smell the bay, miles away, lapping against the shoreline like an excited Jack Russell terrier.
If you removed those, the part would get a much better flow.
Merry Christmas
Gitte

I love how expressive and descriptive this story is. I, like Jodie, knew the how the black eye was born, but I did not know it was fighting for your love, your beautiful Betty.
Great story. I would love for a series of stories, from each of the band members about memorable tour moments.

Well well well, there is eloquence behind the Pretteh! I always thought you were special, but this short story brings it to a whole new level.
Well done, I especially enjoyed your description of the backdrop of San Francisco - you have a true knack of storytelling. Perhaps you will write more for us?
I loved the long, long sentences, filled with words that tickled my imagination, words that tickled all my senses - smell, vision, sound, and I was THERE in the alley, running beside you, feeling desperate for Betty.
Well done. Really well done. Don't stop doing this, it is evident that you like writing. And it is just as evident that you are good at it.
Happy holidays, and than you for sharing.

Jackson you're an excellent writer ... are a complete artist. Will you marry
me?
Posted at 4:19 on Dec 23, 2011
He sings, he plays music, he acts and he writes. I feel insignficant.
Having said that, his style of writing is very amooth and the reader can almost hear him speaking. Imagine being sat around a campfire! I had heard this story before through the grapevine, but hearing it from the horses mouth adds so
much more. And the testicle line.... Classic
Posted at 4:26 on Dec 23, 2011

REALLY that snippet was good - you got me hooked, well done my lovely!!!!

Dear Jackson, that story was wonderfully told. it brought a smile to my face. I wonder if you ever considered writing a book of some sort. I was left wondering what your other band members were doing while you where being brave.

absolutely loved this - especially the part
Get your ass back here before I cut off your sticky fingers and shove them so deeply into every known orifice that your parents will reel back and choose to never consummate that moment of lust years ago when you were merely a swimming little spunk in your father's left testicle!"
it made really laugh out loud - awesome.
Posted at 5:57 on Dec 23, 2011
I love how this is written is like a full blown novel in just a few paragraphs. I really like how adventurous you are with your choice of words and phrases. I would definitely read something of yours again, it is as captivating as your lyrics.
Well Done.
Posted at 6:10 on Dec 23, 2011
Jackson this is amazing!! You should definately write more, with this kind of talent you should write a book. I'd definately read it :)
Keep writing!!
Posted at 6:32 on Dec 23, 2011
But I thought you knew martial arts? The last paragraph describing the fight needs a little pruning but this is interesting.
Posted at 6:47 on Dec 23, 2011
Pretty well written. However, the third paragraph where you talk about being in San Francisco could be reworked. I think simply saying you had a day off but instead chose to work would be sufficient. The parts about the Gap and the song you were writing seemed more like you were trying to fit the information in to the story. It didn't really do anything to move your narrative forward.
That said, I found it to be an interesting story which made me hope for a happy ending.
Posted at 6:47 on Dec 23, 2011
brilliant, very discriptive, engaging reader from start.look forward to reading more xx
Posted at 6:57 on Dec 23, 2011
Hello.
For a first time writer you were really very good. Got a bit too detailed in the middle though.. it sort of broke the flow. Loved the opening line and found the 'singular exclamation' hilarious.
p.s. Do you mind leaving a comment on my blog? I'm having a really bad day. (Honest)
Posted at 6:58 on Dec 23, 2011
Your writing just adapts to its own surroundings. The language is the same. You got me drawn in and then I had time for a little snicker-snort too, as I usually do when you show your true self.. Very excellent job.
Posted at 7:00 on Dec 23, 2011
Aha...
I think I read this article 3 times on your official web-page. I didn´t really understand all of it. I mean I understood the words but not the meaning. I guess my interpretation was wrong because of that.
Betty.... is an instrument, a guitar? I thought it was your girlfriend. I mean because of "Betty", O_o but the article is very well written. Of course you write awesome articles, you are a multi-talented genius. And very good with words... I hope you were alright? Poor Jay, your face... *hug* You write more like a hero: "My hands bit into concrete to cushion my fall" that´s very exciting^^ was it really that way? Haha...
and very funny as well, a very long line:"You son of a ****! That's my guitar! (...)" lol I can imagine that well hahahah.....!! XDDD Especially your facial expression xD no, what I want to say is:
100 stars for 100 Monkeys hero Jackson Rathbone. *smile*
(I couldn´t watch "Aim High" 5 & 6 episode, because it´s only on the official web-page and Europeans cannot watch these videos... I couldn´t find another source either. Could someone please upload the "Aim High" 5 & 6 episode on another web-page which would be international, many fans come from Europe as well. Please, please.)

As a fellow writer I found this to be amazing. This was well written on so many different levels (to to mention hysterical). The imagery was vivid I felt like I lived through it too. THIS is the kind of writing people love to read! THIS is the kind of writing that takes talent to compose! Keep up the good work Jackson!!
Posted at 7:53 on Dec 23, 2011

Jackson, you are one of the most talented people to be currently walking this earth. You are such a fresh breath of air to take in.
This was a great story to read, hope to see many more self written articles in the future.
Posted at 8:07 on Dec 23, 2011
I really liked the article, but I feel as though it ended to abruptly. The first five paragraphs are so detailed. As if you were telling the story in person. But the last paragraph felt rushed, like you had run out of time. Your style of writing paints such a vivid picture, And that is a oddity among the majority of writers today. You might have just stumbled upon your true talent!
Posted at 8:15 on Dec 23, 2011
Jackson you are a really talented writer and an all around amazing artist.
Loved reading it.

LOVE your description of Hey!! One word can convey so much, even a little word :) You are a true wordsmith never have I read a story about a near-miss mugging sound so romantic!(the song Glory of Love by Peter Cetera sprins to mind) A knight in shing armor for gutairs across the globe! We need to get you a bat signal Gutair Man ;) But in saying that i'm very relived that would-be mugger only had his fists and not anything else (you hear such horror stories these days!) Glad this story had a happy ending, It has been my pleasure to read about it. I've said it before I'll say it again....... A True Wordsmith, Don't ever stop writing :)
Lots Of Love @JoesWelshBunny xoxo

Nicely written article, thoroughly enjoyed it. I think perhaps the title of the piece was a touch misleading. Whoever wrote the introductory section immediately underneath the photograph needs a slap for being illiterate. The piece felt very much like an article that was supposed to be part of a larger series rather than a stand-alone piece- which I rather hope is the case as I'd definitely be interested in reading further.
Posted at 8:52 on Dec 23, 2011
I love the fact that you are so protective of the things you love. Your writing style is pretty expressive and all those details made me actually feel your panic and fear when the shadow stole Betty. Write more! Thank you
Posted at 8:53 on Dec 23, 2011

It's amazing written, what a feeling! It's hard not to identify with the situation, if it had been my dearest guitar (Lola). You know where all the little nicks and scratches are from and you have a history together.
I look forward to read a story from the European tour and maybe even some memory from Sweden? Wish you and all the loved ones a Merry Christmas.
Posted at 12:15 on Jan 02, 2012
Would like to read more, for sure! Always a pleasure for you to expand on interesting tales of travel and leisure.

NEVER get between a man and his love !!! That punk's lucky he only got off with a few scuff marks.... Betty's good though? Probably purred even sweeter that night back in your arms, right?? Keep the music flowing you two lovebirds. Love your music. --Tee

I play the guitar and I know the feeling, I think that Betty is how he speaks and lives so to save Betty would be second nature as I would do the same!
Posted at 2:34 on Jan 29, 2012
Absolutely brilliant. Totally grabbed my attention. You've got quite a story-telling talent, and I'd love to read more of these.
But looking at those pics... Owwiee.

There's seriously a GAP at Haight and Ashbury, now? D:
Love your writing style. Quite epic.
I want to read more by you, keep up the good work. :]
Googling 100 Monkeys... now. :P
If your song writing is anything like your storytelling, I know I'm in for a treat.
You're lucky enough to know true love, I'm glad you and Betty were reunited. Even though it came to fisty cuffs--but a man ought to fight for the one he loves, am I right?

Its very good short and to the point, but with enough detail to make the reader feel like they are really there watching it all play out. Its serious and deep with some humor mixed in there. All in all keep writing!
