Le Havre
In this lovely film from Aki Kaurismäki, Marcel Marx (Andre Wilms), a french shoe shiner, comes to the aid of an Ethiopian refugee fleeing from the police. Marx hides him in his home and the neighbors rally around to help conceal him while Marx's wife is ill in the hospital. Even a dour inspector (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) defies his superiors to help the boy escape to England to be reunited with his mother. With elements of the director's deadpan humor (a scene where friends read Kafka to Marx's wife in the hospital had me on the floor), it's a delightfully warmhearted film.
