Michael K and Jared Eng Are As Different As Night and Day, But They're Both Leaders in a New Wave of Celebrity Gossip.

For those unfamiliar with good-natured celebrity news site JustJared.com and the supremely smutty gossip blog Dlisted.com, the author of the latter, who goes by Michael K, offers this comparison: "JustJared is like the best seat at an Outback Steakhouse and I'm a takeout carton from Chili's To Go." In other words, overindulging in either can leave you feeling a bit queasy, and one is nicer than the other.
Although JustJared, founded and edited by Jared Eng, and Dlisted's voices couldn't be more different -- Eng refers to Britney Spears as a "pop princess" while K's dubbed her "Our Lady of Cheetos" -- they're both shepherds of a new wave of online celebrity gossip, driven less by hysterical headlines and dubious quotes from anonymous sources who are "close to the actress" and more by their own personal tastes. In the six years they've both been around, JustJared and Dlisted have gone from the personal blogs of two unknown pop-culture obsessives to full-fledged entities with readership in the millions, even at times surpassing Web gossip titan Perez Hilton.
Here, both men reveal more about their sites, their styles and what happens when Tina Fey starts reading.
How they found their voices:
Jared Eng: When I started blogging from the angle of, "All I'm doing is putting information out there without opinion," the JustJared voice was formed. I like letting other people be the ones to judge. I don't need to say that someone is wearing an ugly outfit -- if it's ugly people will see that it's ugly.
Michael K: I used to be really blunt and say whatever the fuck I wanted to. I go back and read old posts and I'm like, "This sounds like porn." Now I try to sprinkle a little sugar on what I write. When people write in and are like, "OK, that went too far," I take that into consideration and use that to tweak things along the way.
Writing about celebrities with problems:
JE: With Charlie Sheen, I think we did four or five stories about it, whereas other sites were covering every single little development. That's not JustJared culture. I don't like covering the downward spirals of celebrities. I like to build people up.
MK: Everyone thinks Christina Aguilera has a problem, but I don't know what the problem is! People get drunk when they go out. If there was a camera following me around, it would be capturing the same things. I always like celebrities more when they're messes. I find it endearing. It shows that these people aren't perfect.
How they set themselves apart from other sites:
JE: Original reporting usually involves salacious stuff, which isn't our angle. We focus more on innocuous things like what people are wearing. But we'll find out as many things as we can before we post a story to give it a full, 360-feel. A lot of people will just throw up a picture and say "Here's this person at this event," but we do a little digging.
MK: I try not to write about anything political, and children are a fine line. If they're photographed without their parents, then I won't post that. But I also like to be creative. If you have a set of photos and there's no story to go with it, then you have to make up your own. You can't just say, "Here's Maddox [Jolie-Pitt] wearing a white T-shirt." You need to create a story that's entertaining. On the other hand, I then basically end up writing fan fiction about four-year-olds, which is a little bit creepy.
To hang out with celebrities or not to hang out with celebrities:
JE: I like going out and seeing people I know who can then introduce me to people that I haven't met. Now that I'm going to more and more events, people just feel comfortable talking to me. [I've hung out with] Miley Cyrus, Kate Bosworth, Kirsten Dunst and Rachel Bilson at events.
MK: I used to get invited to parties and I don't go anymore because I don't want to meet someone and then feel like I can't write about them. If I meet a celebrity that I've said shit about and they want to be friends with me, then that's weird. They can sit on their side of the cafeteria and I'll sit on mine.
When celebrities give feedback:
JE: I once met Sienna Miller and was nervous because I had posted a lot about her and Jude Law. There was a little awkwardness and after a minute or two she said, "I hear you're very supportive, so I just want to say thank you." Even when I'm scared or reluctant to meet certain people, it ends up being good, since I don't post negative things. I think celebrities feel safe reading it.
MK: Having Tina Fey say she liked Dlisted in an interview was bizarre. Why would she be reading me? I'm trash. Sometimes I'm still like, "I don't know if she really reads this, because this is kind of disgusting." ★

I'm glad to see some press on gossip bloggers other than the supremely obnoxious and annoying Perez Hilton.
I've been reading dlisted for 5 years. I'm always impressed by Michael K.'s ability to be consistently hilarious, yet still be appropriate when the situation calls for it. I never see him take low blows or joke about sensitive or inappropriate things.
His blog never fails to make me laugh, while other blogs almost always make me cringe!
I really think he's very clever and talented and I wish he (and his awesome blog) would get more press!

Go Michael K! Three reasons I like your site:
1) As this article stated, it's your personal take on celebrity news. Anyone can write that so-and-so got arrested (AGAIN!); you give us your opinion about the event. I also love that your abuelita gets into the act occasionally.
2) You don't set yourself up as a model of good behavior. Many times, you admit (even if it's in jest) that you probably act just as crazy as the celebrity you're skewering.
3) You link to other gossip sites, so it's easy to find out everything about everyone quickly and easily.
Tina Fey has good taste.

Dlisted is the ONLY site I go to religiously. Michael K has a flare with writing and is absolutely HILARIOUS. Whenever my day is headed towards stress - I pop over to Dlisted for a guaranteed laugh. Most of us Dlister take to calling celebrities the pet names adopted by Michael.
But don't let him fool you - MK can get real when he needs to.
And MK - don't sell yourself short. I'm sure Tina Fey really does read dListed. She could have grabbed the name of plenty of other gossip sites - you are funnier than you give yourself credit.

I still can't believe how many people read Perez Hilton his site is sooooooooo boring and obnoxious. Dlisted is hilarious, and Just Jared is super generic, like the People magazine of blogs if that's your thing but at least it is well written compared to Perez just making neon pink and doodling on pictures all the time.

I have been reading Dlisted since it had a blogspot.com address or whatever back in the olde-timey days. Michael K is a deity.
Hell, I even bought a dlisted tshirt, and that is bigtime for me.
The guy is smart, witty, amazingly smart, and writes really well.
I ignore the occasional real typos - as opposed to the "typo but it stays" stuff (which are hilarious) because the guy WRITES WRITES WRITES his ass off.
And re: the pic - I've seen a pic or two in the past and thought he was sorta adorable, but now: DANG! What a fuckin' mug!

You have to respect Michael K for not being a brown noser. He's funny and sarcastic and a good writer. The other one you can tell just wants to be part of the 'popular crowd' like Perez. It's just a bunch of self promotion and pretty pictures of sometimes pretty people. You can go to Getty Images for that and a better selection. I hope MK keeps keepin it real....I enjoy his wit and sarcasm.

Just Jared's Jared Eng seems to be taking money for posting on celebs that aren't really very popular and who don't seem to have a lot of positive response. These are very obvious as there is boring post after post on people who would probably be reaching to be considered C-list and children of celebs who are now supposedly talented enough for us to believe that a 10 year old is a serious music artist. Michael K. doesn't seem to give a crap what the celebs think of him and posts honest and hilarious opinions that make his site a lot more fun and a lot more interesting. His irreverent attitude makes D-Listed one of my favourite sites. Michael K is my hero. It is my first go to site whenever the sh&t hits the fan. I want to see his take on it.

Nice interview. I'm a fan of both, but, Dlisted, well, Michael K, is just hilarious. I enjoy the fictional powers and abilities of celebs kids (i.e. Maddox & Zhara). The snarkiness & humor of dlisted matches my own humor. He reminds me of Samantha from SATC. Love his boo (Andy Cooper),Prince Hot Ginge & of course Phoebe Price, lmao.

He's a great story-teller and his writing is unmatched in that you can totally envision what he's trying to get across- I mean really vivid images :-). Although he is modest, you can tell that this fool paid attention in school and english class specifically. You feel like you grew up together with his family stories and pop culture references that you thought were only yours. He owns his typos, he gives you heartwarming animal stories, appropriate obituaries and really he just needs to never ever change. MK is my "hot slut of the day" everyday.

Michael K. literally brightens up my day with his on point humor and, as much as he wants to hide it, his big heart. He can be acerbic, yes, but he always toes the line when appropriate. Jared is a sweet guy and he's doing his own thing, but I just gravitate toward Michael because he's truly using his blog as a creative outlet (he comes up with the most ridiculous metaphors and analogies, not to mention extremely obscure references). In conclusion, yes, I am at his disposal with bells on. Cool heaven is a place with Michael K (but no chanclas).

Love MK. Read his site daily. Used to read Perez, but I banned him years ago after I realized he was trying to be famous himself (and for other more serious issues with his 'character'). Now MK is my guide to all the crazies in the biz. IMO, his humor is the most intelligent of any celebrity blogger. I seriously cannot figure out how he comes up with some of his stuff. It would take a common person days to find the lines he uses to make fun of the celebrity world. And somehow it is never mean-spirited enough to make me find it inappropriate. Great balance.

I love Dlisted and Michael K. I mean, Jesus Christ. I do not know what I'd do without it (no jinxies!).
I wake up every morning and dlisted is the first thing i check, before the news. I'm in a challenging academic program, and while I'm listening to professors drone on and on I think "I wonder if MK has put up a new post?" LOL. I tell my boyfriend all the time "Michael K said this hahahahah (fill in the blank) and Michael K said that hahahaha!" He doesn't really understand, but tries to. ;) I've been like this for years now and if I can't go to dlisted at least 5 times a day, I feel a weird mixture of urge and excitement, knowing there'll be some new silliness to read when I get back. I even know the cast of characters in the comments section. Jesus Christ, this sounds pathetic but I meant it as a celebration! I absolutely love, adore, respect and cherish dlisted and MK! I reiterate everyone else's comments here as fans of dlisted. No diss to JJ, but you can clearly see how many people in these comments specifically HAVE to give shout outs to MK. I'd love for him to start writing books (ala David Sedaris?) he'd be an instant best seller. I want to see more from MK, but I also want nothing to change! He's still somewhat underground and I'd hate to see him reach Perez Hilton status in a way (mainstream ruins everything). However, I don't think he'd change or be anything but authentic to himself. I am also a dlisted addict, have to read it religiously. They may as well shut the Internet down if Dlisted ever stops. Michael K is a huge part of my life. When I struggle with crippling depression, his blog is pretty much the only thing I have the energy to read. I love him, and should he ever need it, he can bunk at my home rent free indefinitely. The only problem is, I don't live in a city as fabulous as New York, so I don't think the opportunity will ever arise.
That and the fact that I probably just scared him to death with my stalker-like post. Oh well.

Love MK, I've been reading Dlisted since it's early days when it used to be on Blogger. Unfortunately all the recent attention it's been getting has brought with it a bunch of assh*les who have taken the fun out of the comments section. I still check it out just to crack up at what MK has to say, but not as often as I used to. Wish it had same community it did when it started, that used to be part of the fun.

To compare these two (sites), on styles, is redundant if not easy to discern:
JJ seldomly creates any original content. If ever. He simply copies captions generated by the folks working on the photo desks at the agencies he patrons, but pays little to use. Grossly over posting material (photo) and devalueing their worth in his attempt to make up for the inept reporting style.
Dlisted, on the other hand, creates original content to accompany an image, ingesting humour and self-deprecation as he goes along.
For you guys to put them in the frame and not point out anything other than how one is a fan sucking up to and wanting to get close to celebs while the other actually has some talent is a bit sad.

I read Dlisted every day. It is a sickness, but in a good way. MK makes me laugh out loud with his unique take on things and his inimitable way with words. He's honest and not up celebrity butt, which is refreshing. There are also random things like the abandonded couch being hot slut of the day or the image of Michael Jackson in a tree. I mean, really, you would have to scour the internet for things like that, but no, MK just offers them to you like a Mother's Circus Cookie. As long as MK keeps entertaining with this blog, I intend to keep reading.

Truth be told, If anyone has ever read Dlisted.com they will quickly understand and agree that not only is Michael K, Hilarious!! He just has a very unique way with words...Honesty for many of us, its pure pure pure comedic genius. I can speak for many of us when i say that sometimes the most hilarious parts of our day is reading through one of Michael's Posts...enough with the rest..
In all fairness, JustJared to me is more for pictures or just for general who "went where" and wore what...Whereas Michael K is like this constant commentary form a friend, that just makes you laugh so hard...

Ihave been reading dlisted since inception. He has always been hysterically funny and makes me wish I was his friend in high school. You know, sitting next to him and talking trash about everyone that walked by or being friends with his chola friends who would get drunk and sleep around. I have turned so many people on to his site and they all love me for it.
Just Jared is great too. I respect his ability to hold back... that can't be easy.

I've followed both since they started. When Jared got hooked up with Buzznet, I congratulated him and knew he was going to be big. I've been a Dlisted slut for over 5 years, MK made me realize that it was okay to hate Heather Mills and that I needed to work harder to incorporate the "C" work into my daily vocabulary. My only regret is that in the early days of the gossip blogs, whenever a reader wrote a negative comment about a celebrity, they would be called "sluts" or "whores" by other readers, I decided that since I was only going to be posting that one time, I was going to make it hard for other readers to insult me, hence the name "Sluttsville". If I had known that I would stick around for over 5 years, I would have been more selective in my username.
Dlisted is more than a celeb blog, it's become an online community. I've met good friends there, and also some crazies. If not for MichaelK, my life would have been without LovesAngelina and Comingback, and a life without bootslaps, tennis balls, toilet bats..really isn't worth living.

I've been reading Dlisted for almost five years and haven't missed a day. That's saying a hell of a lot. There are other sites I think are really funny (non-gossip, MK is the only hilarious gossip blog) but still I forget about them. I HAVE to read Dlisted every day, MK makes me laugh and I need those laughs. I hope he makes a decent living from it, he deserves it. MK could be a superstar but I think he's too clever to take that ultimately empty route.

Another Michael K fan here from Orlando. The first thing I do after coming home from work and tending to home and pets is sit down and read dlisted. Also try to take a peek at lunch on my phone too. I haven't read Perez for a couple of years now since his awful treatment of Adam Sandler's daughter on his site - he is mean, hateful and unfunny, the complete opposite of MK!

It's MK's take on things that make his site worth reading. I've only been to JJ when MK links you for certain stories; never been there on my own. It must serve its purpose - but I find it stale, clinical and boring. MK, don't ever change. You ARE the cool kids table; the celebs are at the wannabe you table. Perez is at the fat nerd nobody likes table. No matter how much celeb salad he tosses, he always will be. Love you, MK!
