Terrible Records: Beautiful People 2011
"It was bro at first sight," says Ethan Silverman. He's sitting with Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor at Williamsburg restaurant Diner, where the two are reminiscing about how they first met through a mutual friend, some three years ago. "Bro at first sight, for sure." In 2009, the two tow-headed musicians launched Terrible Records, a label whose primary mission is to put out music that, says Taylor, its two founders "would obsess over and both be equally into." Taylor -- who has an impressive resume of production work with bands like Department of Eagles and Dirty Projectors, as well as Grizzly Bear -- had long toyed with the idea of starting a label to release his own solo material. As he and Silverman swapped opinions on music (including a mutual love for Arthur Russell and R&B), it became clear that they both shared, in Silverman's words, "similar aesthetic aspirations for what a label would be."

"It's rare that we disagree wholeheartedly about a band," says Silverman, who also plays bass in the psychedelic trio Beige. The Label's first release couldn't have been more fitting. They kicked off Terrible in October 2009 with a split 7-inch containing a previously unreleased Arthur Russell track along-side a song by Taylor's solo project, Cant.

Since their debut, the label has released two additional 7-inches, two EPs and Twin Shadow's LP Forget, which is equal parts Destroyer, Depeche Mode and Dusty Springfield -- perhaps their most acclaimed project yet.  The future is sure to be similarly eclectic.

Silverman has been trying to convince Taylor to do a metal album. "I'm not opposed to it," says Taylor, who has a background in jazz. "I can see putting out hip-hop, R&B, jazz, metal. We should do a jazz/metal split. That would appeal to both our backgrounds."

"We could call it Black Note," interjects Silverman.

Taylor pauses. He looks at his friend. "That's pretty good."
