Digital Divas: Beautiful People 2011
By ELIZABETH THOMPSON

In the age of congratulating our friends on the births of their children via a "like" button, Hikari Yokoyama, Cannon Hodge and Edith Zimmerman are all doing things on the Internet that feel refreshingly personable. Yokoyama, co-founder of the new online exhibition space Paddle 8 (paddle8.com), saw a niche for an online art marketplace that would be curated by a rotating cast of well-known creative types, and include their personal art-related stories. "I love going into a collector's home and having them walk me through their art," she says. "It's all about finding that connecting point for others to relate to."
Hodge, manager of social media for Bergdorf Goodman (twitter.com/bergdorfs), is using Twitter to bring a similar accessibility to the tony department store. "There's not much difference between what I write there and how I interact with my friends," says Hodge of the store's popular Twitter feed. This means informing followers that Bergdorf's men's fashion director Nickelson Wooster "has the best mustache ever." "It makes us less intimidating," she says. "One of the best tweets we've gotten said, 'I used to be overwhelmed walking into Bergdorf's, but since following you, I feel like I'm seeing an old friend.'"
The Hairpin (thehairpin.com), a smart and weird website from the Awl group, also feels like
spending time with friends -- especially the funny ones. "We take an amused angle to the ridiculousness of lady culture and how it's presented to us," says editor Zimmerman. To date, the site's most popular post has been a collection of stock photos depicting women laughing with salads. Though she wants the site to expand, getting up at 5:30 a.m. to start editing keeps her busy enough. Not to mention her new Internet-themed column in the New York Times Magazine. But she's not complaining. "Sometimes I feel like I beat the system. I'll think, 'I'm just writing about some weird thing with silly dialogue I made up.' I feel like a jerk, like I'm just entertaining myself, but I'm actually getting paid to do it. And that's awesome."
