The Neistat Brothers Get Real
Casey and Van Neistat's New Series Reaches Out From HBO
By John Ortved

"To call it reality TV is wrong," says Casey Neistat. "It's first person filmmaking." Casey, one half of the artist-filmmaking duo known as the Neistat Brothers, is discussing their new HBO show, which debuts June 4th. The 30-minute series, simply called The Neistat Brothers, is based on Casey and his half-brother Van's autobiographical, often cheeky Internet films -- but Casey has no intention of keeping up with the Kardashians, or anything close. "Unlike a reality show where you've a whole host of producers trying to figure out how to tell sensational stories, this is Van and me figuring out how to tell stories about ourselves. That buffer of exploitation has been removed." As honest, intimate (and a little mischievous) as their videos are -- Casey and Van explore Chatroulette; Casey and his son make Thanksgiving dinner -- the filmmakers, who emerged from New York's art scene, are most excited about reaching a larger audience. "I think a huge measure of success is how wide your reach is," says Casey, smirking. "That's why I think Grand Theft Auto and Avatar are the two greatest art pieces of the last decade."
