Brit Over Broadway

"Daniel Radcliffe is, like, three blocks away. We've got plans to go for late night dinners," says actress Carey Mulligan, 23, who is part of a British invasion taking over the New York stages this fall with openings of London hits like Equus, starring Radcliffe, as well as Billy Elliott and Chekov's The Seagull, in which Mulligan will make her Broadway debut. Although Mulligan never planned on having a career in America, she's enjoying her time here. "I'm such a cliché -- I'm so excited about sitting in diners and eating burgers," she says. "I always thought that I could be quite happy doing everything in England because there's so much good theater and TV. I know it sounds completely irrational, but I feel really free over here."

Since recently wrapping on the film The Greatest, with Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan, Mulligan is settling into her life in New York by scouting out her favorite restaurants and vintage shops -- two necessities for any New Yorker, and on this day looking very much the part with a pixie cut and high-waisted skirt. Still, there's no place like home. "I don’t feel nervous [about Broadway], because it's like, 'Well, fuck it, if I screw this up I'll just go back to England.'"
