Pass the Envelope, Please

The gays, the straights and the ???'s were out in full force on Sunday night at the Hiro Ballroom at the Maritime Hotel. To fully grasp what exactly the first annual Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards were all about, it's helpful to imagine the Academy Awards, but to replace Billy Crystal with Mr. Mickey, trade in Gwyneth Paltrow for Tinsley Mortimer and add some glitter, rollerblades, eyeliner (on men!), short, short skirts, and Michael Stipe in a parakeet costume. Now, drop in some pouty-looking, hollow-cheeked scenesters, a whole bunch of old-skool types who practically invented New York nightlife, four gay guys and two girls, put it all in a blender, mix it up until it's a beautiful shade of fuchsia, pour it out and serve with a side order of Amanda Lepore, and voilà, there you have it. Yummm!

Highlights of the evening included a performance by the Citizens Band, Lydia Hearst's fake-flower-strewn Heatherette dress, George Whipple's eyebrows, the way Fabian Basabe pronounced the letter "A" (as in "baaaaanter") and Richie Rich calling the Trinity the "original MisShapes." Meowwwww! Do we smell a dance-off?
