Beautiful People 2005: Adam Dugas
Vintage Chaos
By Jeremy Maciak

In the 1930s triple-threats with perfect smiles like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly were cultivated by Hollywood studios. Today, the absence of this practice makes singer-dancer-actor Adam Dugas and his vintage Hollywood yearnings something of an anachronism. Though he's best known around New York as the host and organizer of the annual Christless Christmas party entitled Chaos & Candy, Dugas's artistic ambitions run far beyond city limits. "It's an amazing time to be creative," the 33-year-old says. "People say that everything's been done before, but it hasn't been done by me yet."
After honing his aspirations in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles, Dugas moved to New York in 2000. The first installment of Chaos & Candy back in 2002 took place at the Deitch Projects warehouse in Brooklyn and guest-starred drag king Murray Hill as Santa Claus and Fischerspooner vocalist Casey Spooner as a gingerbread man. "It's the gritty, funky alternative to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular -- I'm trying to take back Christmas for everyone who feels excluded or outside the holiday." In addition to working in television production to pay the rent, Dugas also pops up occasionally in other equally chaotic nightlife endeavors around town, like the Citizens Band, a star-studded cabaret extravaganza that took place at the Maritime Hotel this winter. But Chaos is still the top priority -- Dugas is looking to develop it for the small screen. "I want to model it on the classic television special, somewhere between Pee-wee Herman and Judy Garland. I want to build my career backward, where I start with my network special." And now that he's recently gotten his braces removed, what studio wouldn't want our leading man under contract?
