After performing her heartbreaking ballad "Someone Like You" live at the Brit Awards in February, British singer- songwriter Adele broke down in tears. The second single off her new album 21, the song is about a former love who is now married, despite the singer's admission that "for me, it isn't over." And though including the track on 21 was one thing, performing it on television turned out to be another. "I was overwhelmed. I felt embarrassed singing about how upset I was over this guy to four million people. I also envisioned him sitting at home and watching, feeling smug and amused about the fact that I'm talking about him."

But if anyone should feel satisfied right now, it's Adele. 21 went straight to number one on the British and U.S. charts, thanks to the success of the album's bluesy, disco-tinged single "Rolling in the Deep."

For 21, Adele says she tapped into the "dark, twisted emotiveness" of old country music to shape the album's Southern soul sound. "With this fucking trendy, shitty music you hear now you can be 10 minutes into it and you still don't know what the fucking song is about. You know within seconds of good country music, just by that first chord or note, 'Oh, I see. He's going to go to the bar and then shoot his wife.' I so prefer songs like those." This doesn't mean, however, that she
hasn't ruled out making a happy love album in the future. "I just need to meet someone first," she says. "Fuck me, I'm so single. I hate not having someone to share all of this amazingness with."
