When Jill Stuart hosts a soiree, we're the first to RSVP. Last night their SoHo store feted summer with champagne and a new vintage collection. Ms. Stuart handpicked all the pieces in the shop's downstairs vintage den -- a mix of flirty party frocks, summery sundresses and demure cocktail attire spanning the 1920s-80s. Any Jill fan can see that the designer has been inspired by these finds: Black and white polka dots and tiered '80s-style mini-dresses cropped up in her recent ready-to-wear collections. A "Hamptons" beach section boasts delicate white separates (Puffy would approve) and there are classic summer sandals galore.
Though both the vintage treasures and Jill's eponymous label are highly-feminine, there's always a little edge. Some of the new second-hand pieces are merchandised with her current collection upstairs. We're still into that vintage-biker-jacket-with-a-delicate-floral-dress look, and check out that wild Pucci vest paired with Jill's '09 black romper above. Good stuff.
The "new old" duds are in store till fall, when they'll be packed into the designer's midtown storage to make room for the garments she's nabbed in the meantime. Discounts and vintage specials at the store are ongoing...
