What inspired your Spring 2006 collection?
The collection is called "Tears of Fury" and it's all about a woman's independence, strength and femininity. Last May I was at the Fayetteville country club in Arkansas having dinner and that's basically when it hit me. The setting of the room was rustic and dark, almost mysterious. Having dinner with the members of the club made me think of the mysteries of women. What things do people keep inside just to please others? How some women are a wife, a mother, a girlfriend, and a daughter and how for some people that's what makes a woman. I think a woman should be woman first, both independent and strong without loosing femininity. "Tears of Fury" is about the process of standing up for what one believes in and been gorgeous when doing it!
What music are you using for your show?
For this season I'm using music with an edge. There are a lot of indie bands in Williamsburg. I'm combining the freshness of an indie band like TV on the Radio with some Kate Bush's "Sat in Your Lap."
What Fashion Week parties are you most excited about?
All of the ones that I get to go to really. Fashion week is like one big celebration to me.
Why do you think New York is the fashion capital of the world?
I think New York is a laboratory of styles, media and advertising. People in the rest of the world pay attention to that.
What's the most amazing fashion show you've ever attended?
The House of Field fashion shows were always fun. Also, I think the Alexander Herchcovitch Spring show with the gardens on the runway was fantastic.
When you were younger, was there one, pivotal "moment" that led you to a career in fashion?
My mother made a dress for a Christmas dance and I remember being with her through the whole process of designing the dress. She looked fantastic and I will always remember the moment she came out of her room looking flawless. I tell her constantly that was the day I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. There are no photos of this moment but the image is very clear in my mind. I was like 7-years-old.
What's your ultimate dream location for a fashion show? Where, how, when and why?
A big warehouse space around Bryant Park to transform it into what happens in my head.
What movie do you think has the best fashion?
There are so many. I'm a movie geek. I just recently watched Gilda and Rita Hayworth looks fantastic. Gilda and To Catch a Thief are huge parts of the inspiration for this season.
What revolution/coup d'état would you most like to have outfitted?
The French Revolution.
What are you wearing right now? Please include fragrance, if applicable.
A Fake London button down shirt, MP linen pants, Cole Haan penny loafers and a splash of Paco Rabanne "Metal."
