One day when photographer extraordinaire Henny Garfunkel was trolling through a flea market in Tucson, Arizona, she came across a woman who was selling alpaca wool -- with three of her alpacas in the booth alongside her. Garfunkel was so taken by the animals that she bought a heap of the wool, picked up the largest needles she could find and started knitting a big loopy shawl for herself. When her dear old friend Simon Doonan spotted it, he said, "Girlfriend, Barneys has gotta have these." And so, Garfunkel got to work. Here Tilda Swinton shows off her new "neck armor" in a photo taken by Garfunkel. "I love these because they can be worn as shawls, scarves, headdresses, belts and even as adult diapers," Garfunkel says. "One must always play around with clothing. My father used to think I wore my underwear on my head, when in fact it was a hat I’d twisted up in some wonderful way." The soft, luxurious creations can be purchased at Barneys in New York, MAC in San Francisco, Bon in Tucson and on hennygarfunkel.com/shawls.
