Her wedding to a puppyish Oscar-winner was the social event of last spring. She's the scion of one of America's greatest and wealthiest families, and kept in the news constantly by appearances at fashion shows, charity balls and the ubiquity of her girl-about-town sister-in-law, Tinsley. So what about doing like the other socialite princesses do, and doing nothing at all?
Minnie Mortimer isn't one to stay still. A New Yorker by birth and
now a Malibu-dwelling Angelena by marriage, Mortimer and husband Stephen
Gaghan (the screenwriter of Traffic and Syriana) hop coast
to coast and around the globe. "The combination of New York and L.A. is
perfect, it's golden," she says -- while finding time to surf Bondi,
Biarritz and Mundaka. Now Mortimer is set to focus on her clothing line,
begun in the same spirit of breezy can-do. While visiting Charvet, the
famed Parisian shirtmaker, Mortimer fell in love with the fine men's
shirting fabric, but couldn't find anything to suit her -- so she made
some calls, created some patterns and is turning out a line of her own.
"It was to fill a hole in my wardrobe," she laughs, "that was my
inspiration. It was totally selfish." Her '60s-inspired pieces are chic
and comfortable, inspired by her predecessors in the social elite like
the great mid-century socialite Babe Paley (herself briefly, by
marriage, a Mortimer), and will hit a select few stores in the coming
months.
