Style is something that a lot of people think they have," declares Coltrane Curtis, the new fashion policeman on MTV.com's Overdrive. "But only observant people have style. Style is something that you learn from your experiences. It's your interpretation of what's cool. Not too many cats have style." Curtis began reporting on style for MTV.com a year ago. His broadcasts are now being aired on MTV2, and he was a red-carpet host of the VMAs and the MTV Movie Awards. He describes his interview technique as "keeping it real." "I'm giving real people real-time reporting on flyness. When it comes to celebrities, I know all of them. So on camera I am able to have a certain rapport and dialogue that's real," says the 30-year-old, who was born in Brooklyn but grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. "You are not going to get anybody bullshitting me on fashion. Kanye West can't talk to me about sunglasses. Not too many cats can talk to me about throwback sneakers. It comes off genuine."
If Curtis seems confident about his
sartorial statements, it's because he's been a fly guy for as long as he can
remember. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, one of his classmates
was none other than Farnsworth Bentley (Diddy's umbrella-carrying dandy). He
also spent nine years at *ecko unlimited, where he worked as a designer,
marketing guy, product placement dude, celebrity wrangler, party boy and
resident knucklehead.
