With only two collections -- both products of their womenswear course at London College of Fashion -- to their Mumbai-based brand Miuniku, the newly graduated sisters Tina and Nikita Sutradhar are among the 12 finalists for the inaugural LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. "We've always been very focused on our brand," says 25-year-old Tina. "From when we first started studying, we did all projects as if we were doing them for Miuniku." After high school Tina enrolled in a Mumbai trade school for design, which led to a short course in London for fashion marketing before 23-year-old Nikita joined her for the womenswear course at LCF. Aesthetically, Tina brings a feminine touch to the collections (she loves a cinched waist) while Nikita skews more masculine and obsesses over Balenciaga shapes. "Our first collection, we used a lot of black and white, navy, gray, those monochrome colors," says Tina. "But we don't want to just be those designers who can only do dark, so our second collection was all about exploring how we see and want to use color." Inspired by Ellsworth Kelly and mundane household chores, the sisters created an artfully hued collection rooted in layered silhouettes. Fingers crossed, the LVMH winner will be announced May 28.
