Where's your favorite late-night bar or dive-y spot to grab a bite to eat in New York?
My local watering hole is a place called Daddy-O on Bedford St. in Greenwich Village/West Village. It's a great bar and it has amazing drinks, great bar food and it's just a lot of fun. And it's always open 'til 4 a.m. so you can get a great burger or chicken sandwich until 4 a.m. I've probably been going there for more than seven years.
What are their best things to order there?
They have a great, straightforward, no-frills burger. They also have a Moroccan chicken sandwich that's spiced grilled chicken with a cucumber salad, red onions and lettuce. I forgot to mention that the burger is served with tater tots. When it's three in the morning, hello, who doesn't love a tot?
What I also love about the bar is that they have an amazing cocktail program but it's not pretentious mixology. There's care and detail put into every cocktail that's made but it's still a comfortable, fun, low-key place to hang out. It takes itself seriously but not too seriously.
What are their best cocktails?
I'm a big fan of the East Sider and the herbaceous mojito -- if you love cilantro, that's the drink for you. It's crushed ice, mint, cilantro and jalapeño-infused vodka and a little bit of sweetness. It's herbal and spicy and it's just really delicious. It's on crushed ice so it's like a snow cone. The problem is, those are dangerous because you drink it way too fast.
Any fun stories from nights at Daddy-O?
It's a little bit of a chef-y hang out for chefs in the neighborhood so you never know who you'll run into. There's also the occasional celebrity or hockey player, too -- it's a pretty diverse group. But it's also a bar that I feel comfortable just walking into -- there's not a lot of places where you'd feel comfortable walking in by yourself for a drink. You can sit there, have a drink, read the paper, text.
