Our annual April Beautiful People Issue, celebrating a cavalcade of cuties to watch in different disciplines, has been such a sensation we've decided to showcase noteworthy movers and shakers all-year round on Papermag.com. We kicked things off in the city of Angels, and will be posting an L.A.-based Beautiful Person a-day for the next few weeks.
Jared Degado has officially made the leap from porn star to horror star. The hunky actor, once known in the adult industry as "Vince Ferelli," moved away from skin flicks to co-found Muscle Wolf Productions, a company that makes indie horror flicks with a big helping of beefcake. Since moving to L.A., Degado has been juggling his share of photo shoots, commercials, roles in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and 300: Rise of an Empire, and a whole lot of yoga.
Describe what you do in 3 words.
Scare the Kids.
What are you working on now?
I'm steadily expanding my acting career. Since I started in February of this year, I haven't quite settled into my own realm yet. But I got a great start on my first production as a Spartan and Greek Soldier on the new 300 sequel. I am currently getting a good amount of commercial work and am becoming quite a "villain." My look definitely lends to being intimidating, powerful and diabolical -- but really I just want to give everyone hugs and go shopping for women's shoes...although not for myself.
Describe living in L.A. in 3 words.
Disconnected, concrete jungle.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was little, the first thing that I was passionate about being was an astronomer. I was always -- and am still -- fascinated with space exploration and the cosmos.
If you got to take over MOCA, what would your first exhibition be?
My first exhibition would either be inspired by the artistic beauty of women's high-heeled shoes or center around role-reversal and women's empowerment. Imagery of long legs in elegant heels stepping on the bodies of muscular men.
Are you from L.A. originally? If not, do you remember what your first day living in L.A. was like?
I'm originally from Indiana, but moved to L.A. from San Francisco. My first day living in L.A. -- at Hollywood and LaBrea -- was a very noisy one. Being in the heart of the tourist area, it was hard to walk down the sidewalk to get anywhere. Though it was a nice change to live so close to the gym, the grocery store, and restaurants. That proximity has been my favorite change.
What's the biggest misconception about L.A.?
My biggest misconception about L.A. was that it was going to be more expensive to live here than in S.F. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I would be saving money on rent here! However, the lack of developed public transit pretty much eats up those savings.
Where's your favorite place to eat in L.A.?
So far I haven't been able to explore a lot of restaurants. I have to be very specific with my diet. I do have to say that I really love Nobu and Firefly.
Whose sex scandal is more embarrassing -- Anthony Weiner's or Arnold Schwarzenegger's?
Arnold Schwarzenegger's was more embarrassing because he did it in his own home. The thing about celebrity sex scandals is that we never really know what agreements and rules are set in someone else's marriage. Why is it that we hold everyone's marriage to a strict, monogamous standard? We have no idea if they're allowed to spend time in whatever capacity with another person outside of the marriage.
Who's the most beautiful person you can think of and why?
I have always thought that Anne Hathaway is one of the most beautiful women that I have ever seen in the public eye. She has such a pure beauty about her that just makes me want to look into her eyes and tell her, "Wow!"
What's the most touristy L.A. thing you've ever done? (Or, what's the one touristy L.A. thing that's actually worth checking out?)
I haven't fully partaken in any touristy things. I have gone to the Santa Monica Promenade a few times to hang out and watch my musician friend Scott Stowe perform. I would love to go on some of the tour buses that depart from Hollywood Boulevard and just take it all in. It would be especially fun if I build enough of a career here that I'm recognizable.
What's your best celebrity run-in story?
I've run into many celebrities on various sets, but the most fun was on the set of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The entire cast and crew were amazing, down-to-earth people who obviously have a blast at what they are doing. The best part was getting to be part of Danny DeVito's "Troll Foot" collection, where he takes a picture of locations or people with his little Troll foot in the foreground as he is holding the camera. I played a bodybuilder onstage. He had four of us bodybuilders flex and pose while he slouched back and raised his bare foot up to capture us in his artistic style. He was a really fun guy.
What's your favorite street intersection in L.A.?
That's a hard one to narrow down. Just give me any intersection that's by a good yoga studio and park me there when a class is getting out. I'll sit and watch.
