You might know Kyle Krieger from any number of places: maybe you watched him fight to survive while attempting (and failing) to uphold his vegetarianism on the Discovery show Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls; maybe he's styled your hair at the Chris McMillan salon in Beverly Hills; or maybe you enjoy seeing his chiseled physique all over Instagram, where he's officially been given the moniker of "Insta-stud," granting him membership into the tribe of gay men who get fame and fans from looking tastefully gorgeous all over your photo stream. Either way, this very handsome man is going places and we're glad he took the time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions about Zac Efron and his life in L.A.
Describe what you do in 3 words.
Wander. Wonder. Explore.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I'm planning my next Instagram selfie! I also happen to be going back to school to get a degree in Marine Biology and Environmental Conservation that I never completed the first go-round due to my addiction -- YIKES. I am also passionate about building my business at the Chris McMillan salon in Beverly Hills where I work. I'm also enrolled in a Self-Expression and Leadership course and am always balancing that stuff with friendships and this new relationship I'm in. I think he's a total keeper! My life is sorta one big 'I don't know' and I think I'm okay with that.
Describe living in L.A. in 3 words.
It's like dessert.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
My whole life I wanted to be a Marine Biologist.
If you got to take over MOCA, what would your first exhibition be?
A collection of Instagram self-portraits of course! Just kidding (sorta). Maybe...a Marina Ambramovic performance art installation? [Something] where the audience can participate, add to the experience and the energy and Insta[gram] the heck out of it. Because let's be honest, aren't we all going to these cultural events with the hope of generating a new profile pictures for ourselves?
Are you from L.A. originally? If not, do you remember what your first day living in L.A. was like?
I came from Manhattan. I flew in on Thanksgiving afternoon, 2012. I was scooped up from LAX and driven to this beautiful dinner in Laurel Canyon. I remember that tears came to my eyes as we sat there laughing and talking about everything and nothing. I was so full of gratitude for this new adventure I was about to embark on with a new life. It was magical.
What's the biggest misconception about L.A.?
The biggest misconception about L.A. is that people are vapid, flaky and fame hungry. It doesn't come off that way. Of course there are some, but what you seek, you shall find.
Where's your favorite place to eat in L.A.?
Cafe Gratitude. Hands down. I wear my eatin' dress every time. Bring on that 'I AM COOL' smoothie!
Whose sex scandal is more embarrassing -- Anthony Weiner's or Arnold Schwarzenegger's?
Arnold. I'm mortified for him. Like, mortified.
Who's the most beautiful person you can think of and why?
My badass sister Ali Krieger. No doubt. As a professional soccer player she inspires young athletes around the world to follow their dreams, stay fit and active, be involved with a team and build beautiful life-long relationships. She is my rock. She never left me throughout my crystal meth addiction in my early 20s. She doesn't give up on anyone. Ali is the most humble, kind person I know. She practically has white light beaming from her eyes.
What's the most touristy L.A. thing you've ever done? (Or, what's the one touristy L.A. thing that's actually worth checking out?)
The Griffith Observatory. Absolutely stunning views. You can see the Hollywood sign, all of downtown, and the ocean. Oh, and there is a planetarium! I mean, come on! I like to go at sunset and then look up at the stars after dark.
What's your best celebrity run-in story?
My first weekend in L.A. I was over at my friend -- a director's -- house in the hills for a game night of charades. No one had told me that the cast of Glee and Brittany Snow would be there playing with us. But, shit really got real when Zac Efron walked in. (Good handshake on that one, by the way.) I instantly started sweating. And my first thought was "how is my hair?" They were all so kind and silly. We played until the wee hours. It was major.
If you could be any star from Old Hollywood, who would you be and why?
Is Clooney considered "old Hollywood"? He's like 50, right? If he counts, I'd say him. Yeah. Clooney. I'm totally Clooney.
Actually...wait. I think Elizabeth Taylor (during the thin years). She was one of the first people to stand up to the government about the AIDS epidemic in America. People told her it would ruin her career, and she fearlessly pushed on. I love her for that. She's a balance of sass and class. We also have a shared appetite for life: style, adventure, love, men. But I'd like to think I know how to put my fork down when I've had enough! Just kidding, Liz.
What's your favorite street intersection in L.A.?
Kings Road and Beverly. Sorry Intelligentsia. I like my Kings Road Cafe motor oil...I mean coffee.
How do we get from Chateau Marmont to Venice Beach? Give us driving directions.
But we're at the Chateau, why are we leaving? If I were at the chateau it would take the promise of the perfect surfing conditions or the perfect sunset to pry me from my perch. But if I had to go, I'd Über there. Because no me gusta traffic.
