In this weekly column, MC/DJ Hesta Prynn pairs pop culture stories with an original playlist.
Let's face it: for many of us, college was simply a blur of music and booze. But remember "College Radio?" That awesome station that played Arcade Fire and Bon Iver before anyone else? If you've hit the CMJ festival (or College Music Journal Music Marathon, as it's formally known) at all this week, you may be surprised to learn what is currently charting at college radio. In homage to the blurry years, this week's Five 'n' Five pairs the top five songs on the current college radio charts with five classic drinking games.
1. A**HOLE: "Do I Wanna Know" - Arctic Monkeys
This card game is so confusing I can't even explain it. All I can tell you is that the loudest, most obnoxious boy in the room generally winds up being "President." (I'm looking at you, Bobby Mullenhauer.)
Key lyric: "Are there some aces up your sleeve?"
2. Flip Cup: "Right Action" - Franz Ferdinand
After drinking a Solo Red Cup filled with beer, the player places the cup face up on the edge of the table and tries to flip it. This game is most commonly played tournament style over long weekends at frat parties. Ask your 19 year old cousin about his technique, then weep for the future.
Key lyric: "Come home / Nearly everything is forgotten."
3. Beer Pong: "Gun" - CHVRCHES
Two teams take turns throwing ping-pong balls at a triangle of cups filled with beer. When you land one, the other team drinks. Germ-infested hands all over filthy ping-pong balls generally mean that in addition to everyone getting blasted, everyone also tends to get sick.
Key lyric: "Everything is even / So we finally agree."
4. Beer Die: "Broken Heart" - Dr Dog
Two-against-two game in which teams compete to land the die in an opponent's cup. Similar to beer pong but with nine million rules and (arguably) less skill.
Key lyric: "It's just playing house / Two can do it / You can do it two"
5. Quarters: "Man" - Neko Case
Players bounce a quarter off a table and try to land it in a shot glass. Apparently in Germany they still play this in like every bar, on a regular basis. Who knew?
Key lyric: "And if I'm dipshit-drunk on pink perfume / Then I am the man in the fucking moon"
