Hair and makeup by Piret Aava at Next ArtistsSavvy enough to have released her debut EP #GlobalSkoolOfTwerk 16 months before Miley Cyrus' televised squat-and-thrust, the New York-based, ass-shaking rapper Chippy Nonstop now insists her dancing take a, well, backseat: "I think people ignore my music because they just see me as a dancer, but I know a lot about music."
She also knows a lot about social media. Her latest EP #Finally Verified -- on which she exalts intoxication, cunnilingus and conspicuous consumption over multi-culti beats -- is named for the blue check mark on celebrity Twitter accounts and her crew is dubbed the #Youngkloutgang.
But fans can connect with her in person too, at her new biweekly party "Candy From Strangers," at the all-ages Williamsburg performance space, 285 Kent, with fellow Brooklyn MCs Kitty Pryde and Lina Loves It.
Now, as she's about to move her operation to L.A. where she'll helm a West Coast version of the party and record her new album, Chippy backpedals from her historical social-media centric self-marketing. "I used to care a lot about shaping my personal brand," Nonstop says, "which I still do care about, but now I think what mainstream needs is people being open, honest and themselves."
