Uzo Aduba's character Crazy Eyes in Netflix's buzzy new series Orange Is the New Black -- created by Weeds' Jenji Kohan and based on Piper Kerman's prison memoir of the same name -- makes a good case for staying on the right side of the law. Aduba's performance, anchored by, as her name would suggest, a wild and intense stare, is brave, comedic and downright creepy. Don't get us started on that now infamous peeing scene. She's a standout among a cast that includes Taylor Schilling, Natasha Lyonne, Kate Mulgrew and Taryn Manning.
Would you be friends with your character?
I'm not sure whether Crazy Eyes and I would be friends, but I know we would definitely find ourselves in private conversation, from time to time, about shared unique experiences.
What was your first day on the set of Orange Is the New Black like?
I was so nervous. I had never done anything like it before and I just wanted it to go well so I was extremely nervous. I am so grateful everyone was as nice and welcoming as they were to me.
Have you given your character any trademark catchphrases, mannerisms, or wardrobe choices?
Oh yes! There was a line in the script describing her stare as being "childlike, except children aren't scary," and that informed the way Crazy Eyes allows her eyes to light up for certain people. She's also a bit of a nail-biter.
What's the first TV show that you remember watching regularly?
The Cosby Show.
What TV character did you have a crush on as a child?
Randy Taylor from Home Improvement.
What TV family would you want to be a part of?
What TV shows are you currently addicted to?
Breaking Bad, Real Housewives ANYTHING, and Scandal!
If any actor could make a cameo on your show, who would you want it to be?
What was your favorite series finale of all time?
If you could have a drink with any TV characters, past or present, who would they be?
Denise Huxtable: Because as a kid looking up at her, I thought she was the coolest. Walter White: Maybe I could talk some sense into him. Omar (from The Wire): To see if he was crazy or just right. And also Carrie Bradshaw: Because I'm positive she'd know the best place to score a pair of one-of-a-kind Christian Louboutins.
