Although Galliano was reportedly backstage (and press was kept out of the backstage area) he did not make a catwalk appearance. The clothes were classic Oscar, but definitely had some Galliano flourishes here and there. Suits were tailored with peplums in a signature Galliano style, and there were quilted toiles and chinoiseries. Could this mean that the only thing fashion people (like Liza Minnelli fans) love more than a crash-and-burn fall from grace is a comeback?
The Oscar de la Renta show is always a particularly chic moment in the harried and hectic mayhem that is New York Fashion Week. This season, however, the focus on the show was cranked up considerably thanks to the fact that de la Renta had taken in the disgraced former Dior designer John Galliano to work on his new line. Would the clothes be less ladylike and more louche? Less Park Avenue and more Poiret? More important, would Galliano join Oscar in his bow after the show?
