Welcome to Five 'n' Five, a new column in which MC/DJ Hesta Prynn pairs pop culture stories with an original playlist.
It's my favorite show and yours, and finally the wait is over. Girls gives us back our Sunday night BFF hang sessions on January 13th and a proper soundtrack will warm us up when it drops next week. It's stacked with our indie-pop faves like Robyn and Lia Ices but ... where my rappers at? To inspire the ladies, I've assigned each character their own theme song -- you know, what plays as they walk the fuck in. Bring the ghetto lean bitches, 'cuz this is Girls '90s hip-hop style.
Hannah (Lena Dunham) - "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" by Missy Elliott
Was this intro not written for Hannah to (awkwardly) dance in on? There's no way to listen to this song and not feel cool, exactly what that girl needs.
Marnie (Allison Williams) - "Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J The pent-up aggression anthem. Can't you imagine Marnie warming up to this boxer-style just before the giant fight at the end of Season One?
Jessa (Jemima Kirke) - "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" by Eve feat. Gwen Stefani
Jessa's hot and she knows it, same as this track. I mean it's from 2001, but I'll allow it on a '90s playlist. Nuff said.
Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) - "Talkin' Bout Hey Love" by De La Soul Ray totally wants to "mack and eat jelly beans, run in the cold with no jeans" with Shoshanna. The most innocent of the Girls, this uber-romantic rap song is surely her theme.
Adam (Adam Driver) - "Ghetto Supastar" by Pras feat Maya and Ol' Dirty Bastard
What do you call a man who never wears a shirt and lives off of his grandmother? Ghetto Supastar.
Bonus:Ray (Alex Karpovsky) - "It Was a Good Day" by Ice Cube
Does Alex Karpovsky not just scream O.G.?
