Friday afternoon, the arts organization
Creative Time, known for their playful public arts projects, invited a select group of artists to participate in
a sandcastle competition in the Rockaways. The weather cooperated, and so it became reality that art world heavy-hitters like
Tom Sachs and
Dustin Yellin commingled with unsuspecting children and locals as they and their assistants toiled for three hours in the sand. The timed contest took place on the beach in front of Rippers, and an official commentator with a megaphone roamed around narrating the action. Many of the entries tended toward the conceptual, such as the hole which Sachs dug to China (as his rudimentary sign above the tunnel indicated). At one point the MC gave the megaphone to a ten-year old boy who had unofficially entered the competition and was working on his own sand castle amid the artists, and he yelled to Sachs: "using a generator is cheating!" The winner, who received an oversized check for $300, a bucket of champagne, and a golden Creative Time shovel, was the team of
Jen Catron and
Paul Outlaw, who built a human fountain in which they perched on platforms spitting water at each other. 2nd place went to
William Lamson for his primitive compass of sorts, and 3rd went to
Jen De Nike for her more traditional entry featuring a female figure. Other artists included
Marie Lorenz,
Ryan McNamara,
Kenya Robinson,
Snarkitecture, and
Laura Wasser and
Amit Greenberg.
