San Francisco's Believer magazine commissioned Calvin Johnson (K Records founder and musician in his own right) to create a cassette compilation of cassette-only releases, "Love Songs for Lamp Shades." This month they're taking it on the road, Johnson will be playing tunes off the cassette at Muchmore's tonight, alongside Katie and the Lichen, Laura Lief, Old Night, Priests. [via Believer]

East Village lounge Drom is hosting the second installment of Trap Rap Fridays, featuring "trap rap, country rap tunes, and shake junt anthems" spun by KDS, Farrington G, Meka, Mess-Kid, Low Key, and host. J. Ross. [via Purple Pedigree]

Screen Shot 2012-08-10 at 8.34.14 AM.pngChicano Batman, L.A.'s much-beloved surf-rock/cumbia trio (who often play with an ironing board as a keyboard stand, and who raised $4,500 on Kickstarter to fund the vinyl pressing of their second album,) play a free gig this evening at Amoeba Music.

The L.A. Food and Wine Festival, which kicked off yesterday, features a slew of chef-hosted dinners and events taking place throughout the city through Sunday. We're bummed that Wolfgang Puck (who started the festival)'s "Dinner Under the Stars" is sold out, but so it goes. [via LAFW]

Billy Boy Arnold, a harmonica player who worked with Sonny Boy Williamson and recorded with Bo Diddley, and one of the last member's of Chicago's original blues scene, plays tonight at SPACE. [via Time Out]
