Last night, the American Film Institute honored Shirley MacLaine and gave the public its first glimpse of the legendary actress in her role on Downton Abbey, playing Countess Cora's mother, Martha Levinson. From what we gather, Levinson is the wife of a Cincinnati dry goods magnate and, given her surname, many have speculated that she (and presumably her daughter) is Jewish. In the clip above (from a quick-thinking fan who videotaped his/her TV set), we see the first interaction between MacLaine's character and Maggie Smith as the Countess of Grantham. Note Martha Levinson's thoroughly contemporary 1920s flapper style as compared to the Countess' conservative, Victorian/Edwardian dress. We predict a fun season of grand dame catfights!
