Hey, today is Cyndi Lauper's birthday! To mark C.L.'s big day, we decided to dig up a 1988 issue featuring a cover story and big fashion spread themed around Lauper's June birthday, as well as our own June anniversary. (Paper's 28 this month!) The story, which was edited, conceived and entirely organized by Lauper, features her styling her crazy friends and French-Italian family members to look like her. Our Kim Hastreiter was friendly with Lauper because the pop-star had worked at Screaming Mimi's before she became famous (Kim's long-time friend Laura Wills owns Screaming Mimi's), and the interview between the two of them in the PDFs below is pretty amazing and weird. Of her inspiration for the bananas fashions featured in her story, Cyndi tells Kim, "I've always believed in the layered look. And my family is such a bunch of hamsters." (We apologize for the quality of these scans -- we used to print on news-printy paper and it doesn't translate particularly well.) Happy Birthday, Cyndi! You're so unusual.
