In this ambitious, audacious, transcendent new film from director Christophe Honore, real-life mother and daughter Catherine Deneuve and Chira Mastroianni play the film's mother and daughter, Madeleine and Vera. The devastating saga begins in 1964 with a young Madeleine (Ludivine Sagnier), a part-time prostitute who falls for a Czech doctor (Rasha Bukvic) and ends 40 years later with her daughter having free-wheeling love affairs with her colleague (Louis Garrel) and a gay musician (Paul Schneider). Like Honore's Love Songs, the actors burst into song in a Jacques Demy-style, but the story of loss, lust, love, AIDS and even 9/11 richly resonates.
