Word of Mouth
Screen shot 2012-05-25 at 5.24.26 PM.pngIt's Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial milestone where it's acceptable to wear white, put your swim trunks on and start wearing Sperry's again. It's also the time to get your bikini'ed bum out to the Rockaways and start drinking.

To start the day out, stop at Rippers (the Meat Hook and Roberta's collab outpost) and grab yourself a fresh (virgin) cucumber and mint juice. Tip in a flask full of gin, add some soda water, and you've got an afternoon road soda. Settle into the sand and crack a couple of undercover beers bought at the bodega on the way out. Swig a quarter real quick and then drop in a an ounce of lime juice, dash in some hot sauce and you've got a makeshift michelada. If you want to cool off and need the real thing, stop up at Low Tide and grab a picnic table and a shandy with the rest of the sun-baked, sandy New Yorkers. A chocolate-dipped, pretzel dusted frozen banana from Motorboat and the Big Banana will go very well with that ice cold shandy you just ordered. Sample the stand's fried fish and then move on down the beach to Caracas for some early evening arepas and tall, iced glasses of tropical rum cocktails (yes, you can have an umbrella). Come twilight, if your thirst has not yet been sated, take your pink cheeks straight into Irish Circle for a couple of pints and a taste of the Rockaways' local nightlife (live music, underage drinking, overage drinking and trivia nights are all possibilities).
