The creme-de-la-creme of New York and Hollywood came out last night to celebrate the new Broadway production of Arthur Miller's
Death of a Salesman, directed by
Mike Nichols.
Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Willy Loman, joining the long list of legendary actors who have played the downtrodden salesman, including Dustin Hoffman, Lee J. Cobb, George C. Scott and Brian Dennehy.
Andrew Garfield plays Willy's son Biff, a former high-school athlete who is struggling to find his way in the world under the watchful, hopeful eye of his father. Garfield's girlfriend
Emma Stone, who met Garfield on the set of their new movie
The Amazing Spider-Man, came to see the show (in Lanvin, nonetheless!) As did other Oscar-regulars and stage legends like
Meryl Streep,
Julianne Moore,
Anjelica Huston and
Maggie Gyllenhaal and
Peter Sarsgaard.
Diane Von Furstenberg and
Barry Diller,
SNL-star
Bill Hader and Nichols' old pal,
Elaine May were also waiting to toast the stars after the show. We bet it was a fun after-party despite the heaviness a show about the broken American Dream and the last days of Willy Loman.
