"I feel like this is what Nicki Minaj's closet is like!" ELLE creative director Joe Zee exclaimed as he walked into Barbie's Dream Closet at Lincoln Center's Rubenstein Auditorium last night. The space was transformed into a fantasy wardrobe where pink ruled and sullenness drooled. Pop jams by Katy Perry and Lady Gaga blasted through the space, thanks to DJ Mia Moretti. And between sips on champagne and white cosmos garnished with a pink rock candy, guests admired models dressed in Barbie's most iconic looks and took turns trying on the doll's famous frocks in virtual dressing rooms.

"Barbie will always be a relevant icon for girls," Zee explained. "Because she is the epitome of someone you can dress, someone you can have fun with. She was my first styling client! I use to dress her up in evening gowns all the time. I wanted full-on glamour."

Making our way through the pink parade, we almost missed designer Chris Benz, whose fall 2012 collection debuts tomorrow. "I love that I am camouflaged here," he said brushing back his disguise of cotton candy-colored hair. "I love pink, and I've been feeling it for a while, as you can tell. It's one of those weird colors that always makes you feel happy when you see it." Had he ever thought of designing an outfit for Barbie? "Absolutely, a pink suit!" he exclaimed. "The '50s era Barbies with the bouffants and swimsuits are my favorite." Although an admirer of Barbie, Benz always had his eye on her beefcake boyfriend. "I am a huge Ken fan, as you can imagine," he said. "I had Malibu Ken as a child, the one with the tiny boxer swimsuit." Had he heard of the breakup? "Yeah, I think she's better off. I love Barbie as an independent women with Ken as sort of a bad boyA friend."

After washing down a mini Lobster roll and a rose macaroon with a strawberry milkshake we spotted Rose McGowan. The actress explained that she was in town for some meetings and told us that she actually "never played with Barbie's growing up. It just wasn't my thing." But, she says, "I became interested in them later on. I've actually bought some and had my seamstress knock off the same dress she was wearing. Barbie has some great fashion!" So if not Barbies, what was she playing with growing up? "Books, I read a lot," she disclosed. "My favorite? Well, it depends on the mood, but the book I could live in forever is... The Count of Monte Cristo."
