Altered Zones threw a CMJ-week party at the New Museum Saturday night. The bill included plenty of quality talent, like
Atlas Sound,
Prince Rama and
Light Asylum, but we were there mainly to see what would happen when hardcore punk band
Trash Talk played (their lives shows resemble a cyclone). We'd seen them plenty of times (including the night before -- they were one of CMJ's most popular bookings), but most definitely never in a museum. Their set turned out to be a typically chaotic one, save for the presence of more bewildered onlookers than usual. While crowd-surfing, Trash Talk lead singer
Lee Spielman ended up on top of a surprised couple who were obliviously making out in the back of the room. Before their set, we caught Montreal's one-woman electronic act
Grimes, up in the penthouse sky room. We only wish Trash Talk had played up there instead of in the basement, to enhance the irony.
