Out now on their DVD-on-demand line is The Music Lovers (MGM),  Ken Russell's delirious 1970 biopic on the turbulent life of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky. Richard Chamberlain gives a fiery, impassioned performance as the tormented composer, conflicted about his homosexuality. Glenda Jackson is heartbreaking as Nina, the unfortunate wife who succumbed to madness. It's a typical Russell film -- overblown, excessive and in this case, wildly enjoyable. I remember buying Chamberlain's boring autobiography to find out about the making of the movie and he covered it in practically one sentence, which pissed me off. Since Chamberlain wasn't officially "out" at the time he made the movie taking such a role was a real risk. In any case, I've always loved the movie and am thrilled that it's finally available on DVD.
