Chris Taylor, whose solo project CANT plays the Bowery Ballroom tonight, can juggle multiple jobs better than a carny can juggle bowling pins. Taylor's main gig, as bass player and producer of Grizzly Bear (Jay-Z and Beyoncé's favorite indie band) is on hold this month while he tours in support of Dreams Come True, his debut record as CANT. The LP is a stunning amalgamation of electro-dance beats, shimmering melodies and wistful vocals. In addition to his work with Grizzly Bear and CANT, Taylor heads up Terrible Records with Ethan Silverman of Beige, and both gents landed in PAPER's Beautiful People issue this year. Before hitting the road with CANT, Taylor chatted with PAPERMAG about switching hats between his solo project and Grizzly Bear and addressed rumors that he's opening a new restaurant in Brooklyn.I was supposed to interview you a while back, so the first question I have written down is going to sound extremely dated: Where were you during the earthquake (the one that rattled the Eastern seaboard in August)?
I was in upstate New York at a band mate's friend's house writing music, so I didn't feel it at all.
You seem like a pretty busy guy with Grizzly Bear and Terrible Records. What inspired you to start CANT?
I guess I just wanted to write my own songs. I always want to be learning something new, and I wanted the experience of making my own record.
You recorded the CANT record -- Dreams Come True -- with George Lewis Jr. of Twin Shadow. How long had you been working on these songs, and what was the experience of recording them like?
We just set up in a bedroom and worked on getting interesting sounds. It was nice because there were no expectations. We started writing the record in June of last year. We wrote about 75% of the songs -- just instrumentals and stuff -- in about a week and a half, then I put it down for five months to do Grizzly Bear stuff. Then I came back to it and finished the lyrics.
What have you learned in your experiences in Grizzly Bear that you can apply to being a solo recording artist?
I don't really know. It's all kind of the same thing, since I record Grizzly Bear, too. It's all learning and creativity.
And I've heard that you're opening a restaurant in Williamsburg. Any truth to that rumor?
It is true. But it's in the early stages, so I can't talk about it just yet. Stay tuned.
