Designer Marlon Gobel is our kind of guy. He loves bright colors, fun patterns and even a little sparkle. Gobel worked for menswear designers Thom Browne and Michael Bastian before striking out on his own with the Fall 2010 season. We asked for a preview of what he'll be showing this Fashion Week, and he was kind enough to oblige!
"I wanted to keep things going with the idea of art and clothing and making something special for guys (like the Hand Painted Velvet Blazers for my Fall / Winter 2011 collection). Now more than ever things need to feel familiar but be new, so that took me to this idea of "NEW & IMPROVED!" Then I thought of some of my favorite pop artists like Andy Warhol, Damian Hirst and Liu Bolin who paints himself to be urban camouflage. Then with all that swirling in my brain, I was looking through a 1957 issue of Vogue and an ad for ketchup with two women standing against shelves filled with hundreds of perfectly lined-up bottle made them "super special," making it clear to me that Spring/Summer 2012 would be SUPER-MART! As with my past collections I am mixing tradition and modern menswear. I have done this with high-definition prints on cotton and tech fabrics that are phosphorescent or have an optical effects. It sounds very high tech but ends up looking cool, fresh and sophisticated."
Check out this teaser video and above, some of his core inspirations and a preview of one of his looks.
