Julie and Cry Terror, two '50s women-in-peril thrillers, are now available on Warner Archive DVD-on-demand. Julie (1956) is one of the rare suspense films that Doris Day starred in and Day plays a stewardess stalked by a jealous psycho husband (Louis Jourdan). The high point is when he sneaks aboard a plane and shoots the pilot so poor Doris has to land the plane herself. And this was way before a cross-eyed Karen Black did it in Airport 75. Cry Terror (1958) stars James Mason, who plays a man duped into making small bombs he thinks are for the government. But his old army buddy (Rod Steiger) and his gang (a fabulous scary Neville Brand and sexy Angie Dickinson) are really trying to extort $500,000 from a major airline by threatening to blow up one of their planes. Steiger holds Mason, his terrified wife (Inger Stevens) and child hostage. Great NYC locations including a chase down the Christopher Street Path train tunnel which, in real life, actually gave some cast members carbon monoxide poisoning. Both of these thrillers, believe it or not, are actually fun to watch and were both directed by Andrew L. Stone.
