Word of Mouth
jessica6story.jpgIf you're a fan of disco revivalists Hercules and Love Affair (we are!), chances are you've heard of/already like Jessica 6. Comprised of vocalist Nomi, bassist Andrew Raposo and keyboardist Morgan Wiley, the group first came together when they acted as additional musicians in the touring version of H&LA (Nomi has contributed to H&LA's self-titled debut, most notably as a vocalist on the soulful "You Belong").

Fast forward to 2011, and Jessica 6 has long been quietly at work building their rep (through a heavy amount of touring and some single releases, like the dark and dancey "Fun Girl") as an acclaimed R&B/nu-disco/house hybrid. Their new album,
See The Light (out today, and which can be streamed here), is sure to only help the process. Light showcases the talented trio's improved sound, musical variation, and keen ability to stay original and current while calling on the disco gods of the past for influence. I caught up with Nomi as the band prepped for a gig in Münster, Germany.

The band name is taken from a character in Logan's Run. Why?

The name simply struck a bell.  In the movie, Jessica 6 rebels against the underground world they are led to believe is their only existence. We like that metaphor and also enjoy the way Jessica 6 reminds us of Vanity 6 & Apollonia 6.  The third 6!

How did you guys end up collaborating on this project?

We toured a lot together and had a great connection. We then decided to see what it would be like to collaborate in the studio.  It was very clear from those initial sessions that we should work on a record and form Jessica 6.

What's your songwriting process like?

All my writing comes from a personal place.  I'm initially inspired when I hear a melody or a rhythm.  It opens something up in me  -- then my emotions come through with their own voice and melody.

How important is New York to Jessica 6?
Very important.  There is a great musical history that has definitely been fused into our sound.  There are also a lot of great musicians in New York who contributed to the record.  It's a very inspiring city to create in.

What's some advice you could give to people who want to tour as much as Jessica 6 does?

Stay in touch with your friends and family because it is very easy to lose your center.  Your family will humble you.  Also... GTL!

What place have you learned to appreciate through touring that you didn't know much about before?
We've been lucky enough to play a bunch in Istanbul.  It's an amazing city.  The animals there are very intuitive. The people are super nice, food is excellent and music is off the hook. Beats for days. The sound of our title track 'See the Light' was inspired by Istanbul.

What can people expect from the new record?
The album is very eclectic and emotional.  It's raw and honest.  I'm excited for the Deluxe version to be released.  It has an extended booklet with beautiful images and full lyrics.  There is also a bonus track called 'Even The Heartless' and an embedded video.
