PAPER
Word of Mouth

This stylized, charmingly hyperbolic video for Puro Instinct's "Stilyagi" is equal parts Calvin Klein Obsession commercial and 80's cop show opening credits. There's a lot of intense staring and sauntering with purpose, though nobody seems to really get anywhere and everyone is dressed like they are coming home from the Palladium. Ariel Pink, who also plays on the track from the group's Headbangers in Ecstacy album--walks around in a suit with a cigarette, wearing sun
glasses at night (he looks really tired), looking like he's either a private detective or lamenting leaving a club alone. That stumbling image is transposed over the band's blonde vixens, Piper and Skylar Kaplan, singing in black evening dresses into vintage microphones. Everything is edited beautifully in a kaleidoscope of quick camera cuts, slow fade-outs, and fuzzy 80's video effects to replicate the song's slow, swirling groove. Catch Puro Instinct at Stereogum's Last
Night in Texas SXSW showcase on March 19.
