Out now on Blu-ray and DVD is the first season of The Walking Dead, AMC's living-dead saga that tested the waters in a six-episode first season and was quickly a ratings grabber. With a beginning similar to 28 Days Later, an Atlanta police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakes from a coma in a deserted hospital only to find the world has devolved after a zombie epidemic. Fighting off hungry ghouls he searches the countryside for his lost wife and child. His wife has been told he is dead and is shacked up with his good friend now in a woodsy compound. I was reluctant at first to give over to this series but after the first couple of episodes it really got great. And it was pretty outrageous for TV, too. An episode featuring the leads covering themselves with intestines to disguise their "human" smell was a killer. Also, the thought that a zombie TV series exists warms my heart in a way. The plot twists and characters got so involved, developed and strong that the cliffhanger ending leads me hungry for more. Bonus features includes and extensive "making-of" and extra footage.
