Word of Mouth
Katie Gallagher's spooky collection last night at Milk Studios felt like a deleted scene from Lykke Li's "Get Some" music video. (See: zombie eyes, crimped hair, ashen models.) PAPERMAG caught up with Gallagher at Rise's cuckoo-crazy illesteva party, which boasted many a downtown darling (Charlotte Ronson, Harley and Cassie) and DJs-about-town (Jus Ske, Mia Moretti, et al). Gallagher told PAPERMAG about her voodoo-inspired collection, her feed-models-candy-corn tradition, and why she's not quite a people person when it comes to fashion.

Explain the inspiration behind the collection.
The collection is called gris-gris and it was inspired by voodoo. A gris-gris is just a little sack set for spells and it's hair, bones, and skin -- kind of like my models.

Any Valentine's Day plans?

No,  but I'm really into holidays. I had conversation hearts and candy corn backstage for the models. I do that every season. It's bad luck without candy corn backstage. So, I have three containers of candy corn and conversation hearts. For tomorrow, me and [boyfriend Nikolay Saveliev] will probably just go to dinner or something. Lots of drinks.

I'm loving your look. How would you describe your personal style?
I pretty much wear my own collection. I always say I would never design something I wouldn't wear myself. I'm wearing Spring/Summer right now.

Do you draw any inspiration from street style or style icons?
Not people. Kind of ideas, personalities, that kind of thing.

So are there any exciting, emerging designers you're into this week?
Not really. I mean, my favorite designer is Rei Kawakubo from Comme des Garçons. So that's my ultimate favorite designer. I don't like a lot of New York names really. I mean, I'm not gonna say I don't like it, but it's very commercial and I like exciting things. It's hard here.

How did you try to remain calm before your presentatio?
Everybody always says our shows are pretty calm, which is weird I guess. I always have everything taken care of, I make everything myself and I was done a week in advance with twenty looks. I run everyday -- not today, but yesterday I ran. I came back forgetting that I was a little late. I met a model at the door, so I had to fit her in my running clothes which was kind of embarrassing. She didn't really notice I guess.
