PAPER's David Hershkovits Stops By the KBG Radio Hour
By David Hershkovits
KGB is a bar and literary salon in the East Village that does more
than pour drinks and host readings. They also have an Internet radio
station and a monthly show, the KGB Radio Hour with Mark Jacobson and
Larry "Ratso" Sloman. Knowing these two veteran New York journalists for
many years, I was more than happy to join them when they invited me to
be on their show recorded live at KGB Bar the first Wednesday of every
month. This free-form throwback features lots of kibbitzing and
schmoozing and serious conversation about conspiracy theories and smoked
pastrami. There's even a token shiksa, Ally, to keep things even. On this
given night we were entertained by the charming and witty rock 'n' roll ventriloquist Carla Rhodes and Cecille. Also on hand were Reginald
Lamar, a kind of African-American Antony Hegarty, and Asher Lack with
Raven and Chimes. Asher's dad, the artist/actor/humorist Steven Lack was
also on hand to keep the funny going. Eventually my turn came for some
friendly sparring about nightlife with Guest of a Guest's Ross Kenneth
Urken. And so it went. Oh, yes and then there was the guy to plug his
upcoming play, a Yiddish version of Romeo and Juliet. L'chaim! Listen to
the show here.
