Mr. Mickey

Though New York's King of Gossip Michael Musto is a regular on Lincoln Road., Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive in Miami year-round, this year he took his first trip to Miami Art Basel and we couldn't wait to get his reaction. Mr. Mickey caught up with his old pal to get his impressions.

This was your first Art Basel. What did you think?

I'm so sick of people always saying "What? You haven't been to Art Basel?" It's like all the years of people saying, "What? You don't have HBO?" Well, I still don't have HBO but at least now I can say I did go to Art Basel. I finally gave in -- and it was tons of fun. Miami's such an aesthetically beautiful place anyway, but this definitely upped it a notch.

What fun things did you do there?

Let's see. Free meals, the big art show at the convention center, free meals, the PAPER party, free meals, bike riding, free meals, the pool party, and free meals.

You love to ride bikes in Miami. Is it more or less bike friendly than NYC?

Well, there used to be only two places to rent bikes in Miami. But suddenly there are dozens of scooter stores that also rent bikes, so you don't have to even go two feet before you get some wheels. And bike-riding in South Beach is an absolute dream. You feel like you're floating through some incredible amusement ride filled with beautiful houses and gorgeous people. NYC's still my fave because at the end of my bike ride, I've often arrived somewhere where I can actually make some money, but Miami is definitely heaven on earth for bikers.

What did you think of Wynwood Kitchen? I know you ate there.

Wait, was that one of the free meals? Oh, yes it was. Well, the murals are astounding and in between courses you can walk around the grounds and see more of them. I love eating in an environmental art space. And my chicken curry in a clay pot was like cuisine and anthropology all at once. I also adore Meat Market (on Lincoln Road), which has great people-watching and amazing carmelized brussel sprouts and Kobe beef.

Tell me about your personal art collection.

My main "piece" is a portrait of a clown without arms, but the vast majority of my "collection" consists of large, kitschy portraits of myself -- another clown, basically. It's very Norma Desmond, which scares me -- and so do clowns.

Do you have a Miami beach look?

Yes, a smirk and a raised eyebrow. Oh, you mean my clothes? Well, this time I served lots of stripes and patterns, and though I basically looked like a TV set on the blink, people reacted as if I'd reinvented the wheel, so I'm sticking with it. I love wearing tons of layers in the sun because it's so wrong it's right, and I have terrible knees.
