Out on DVD this week is Perry Mason Season 5 (Volume 2) (CBS), another thrilling batch of TV mysteries starring Raymond Burr as the unflappable attorney Perry Mason who solves complex crimes with his trusty secretary Della Street (Barbara Hale). What I noticed in these excellent 15 episodes was the host of cult icons that pop up. Rex Reason and Jeff Morrow -- both from This Island Earth -- are reunited in The Case Of The Ancient Romeo. Allison Hayes who played the formidable lead in The Attack Of The 50 Ft. Woman stars as a secretary in one and Victor Buono (Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?) stars as a beatnik artist an another along with Zazu Pitts (Greed). (Burt Reynolds also pops up on the stand in another episode. )The mysteries are so brilliantly convoluted and clever. One mystery set around a theater troupe mounting a production of Romeo & Juliet ends with Perry Mason recreating everyone on stage for a terrific reveal. By this in 1962 season they had the formula down pat and were turning out fabulous television.
