Word of Mouth

It looks like the days of models being "seen and not heard" are finally coming to an end. Over the last year, it seems that the phenomenon of model-slash-something-or-other has been on the rise, and I couldn't be more excited to see what my favorite faces of fashion are hiding up their sleeves. Last night, Agyness Deyn -- with the help of British clothing brand All Saints -- threw an official launch party for NAAG, the online fashion publication she creative directs, edited by her longtime pal Fiona Byrne. Aggy isn't the only recent top model turned creative director: Earlier this year, Anja Rubik took the helm of 25 Magazine with her boyfriend, Sasha Knezevic, who serves as the Editor-in-Chief. The model-as-editor isn't exactly a new concept. Helena Christensen is one of the founders of NYLON, and even Vogue's Grace Coddington got her start in fashion modeling as a teenager. Aside from publishing, a number of models have taken up fashion design, including Victoria's Secret model Jessica Hart, whose casual clothing line Neon Hart is a hit in Australia, and Jessica Stam, who created a capsule collection for Rachel by Rachel Roy early this fall. (And remember when Coco Rocha wore her own design to this year's Grammy Awards? Yikes.) This migration from modeling to other areas within the industry makes total sense. Not only are models the muses to photographers, designers and editors alike, they get to experience almost every aspect of the creative process first hand, and get much more behind-the-scenes access than most. I wish all of my favorite girls the best of luck in their endeavors, and am looking forward to seeing what they come up with next! Do you have a catwalker crush you'd like to see branch out? My fingers are crossed for Abbey Lee!
