Out on DVD now is:  I Knew It was You: Rediscovering John Cazale, a tender documentary by Richard Shepard about the remarkable actor John Cazale, whose film performances are so indelible and memorable. The film charts his, sadly, short life -- he died young from lung cancer with girlfriend Meryl Steep devotedly at his side. But in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and The Godfather II, he made such a tragic hero of brother Fredo, and he was creepily riveting as the bank robber with Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. And in The Conversation alongside Gene Hackman, and beautifully in The Deer Hunter, one can't take your eyes off him on screen. There is something so vulnerable, and strange and beautiful about him. Actors reminisce such as Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Olympia Dukakis and many others about how thrilling it was to work with him. And others like Steve Buscemi, Sam Rockwell and Philip Seymour Hoffman about how inspirational he was an actor.
