But in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and The Godfather II, he made such a tragic hero of brother Fredo, and he was creepily riveting as the bank robber with Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. And in The Conversation alongside Gene Hackman, and beautifully in The Deer Hunter, one can't take your eyes off him on screen. There is something so vulnerable, and strange and beautiful about him.
