DJ/violinist duo Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe have only been playing their hybrid of dance music and classical music for a year and have already become a must-see New York nightlife act. Chelsea Clinton's also apparently a fan -- booking Moretti and Moe to perform at her recent wedding reception. We chatted with the duo at last night's Sounds Like PAPER concert, where they wowed the audience, and us, with their unique sound, about their high-profile wedding gig and their new video look book with Alice + Olivia, coming to the backseat of a taxi cab near you. You played at Chelsea Clinton's wedding. Tell us about how that happened.
MM: We had done some events for the people who were organizing the wedding and they told us they had something they wanted us to play at.
CM: We didn't even know who it was we just had to sign papers .
What was it like playing for that crowd? Were Bill and Hilary into it?
MM: It just felt like we were playing for our friends.
CM: Weddings can be disastrous in a sense, but everybody was totally chill and totally happy the whole night. It was a really fun, laid-back environment
You've been playing together for about a year. How did you meet?
CM: We met for the first time at the club Ella in the L.E.S.
MM: We were both playing, but separately, and it wasn't for a couple of months that we actually talked to each other about maybe playing together and then we basically got offers. We played the Lollapalooza after-party. I think the Virgins were playing and some other big names so we're like -- "Fuck that could be really good."
CM: We got such a good response without even really knowing what we were doing that we realized, 'Maybe this is something that could work and progress into something.' We somehow kept getting booked for things
MM: Every time we played we felt like it was a whole different act because we never do the same set twice really. There are songs that we like and that work which we end up playing a lot, but we never do the same set, so it always feels like we're doing a whole different show. We played the same Lollapalooza after party this year and it felt like a completely different gig. I didn't even feel like I was in the same band. I guess that's what you do being a D.J. you're not limited to one genre even. If I'm playing tons of hip-hop one night and the next I'm playing all disco, it's just such a broad reach that you never get bored really.
That's the beauty of what you two do together. You did get invited to Chelsea Clinton's wedding after all.
MM: We still have to send her a thank you card!
CM: The funny thing was, we were both so sick that night. We were laying in these little twin beds in our green rooms.
MM: There were these two little twin beds with like fake foam mattresses
CM: No blankets!
MM: And we were just kind of passed out. I was secretly kind of hoping they would just decide to go off on their honeymoon and cancel the wedding!
Your music is going to be featured in video look book for Alice + Olivia this year for Fashion Week. That video will also be played in the backseats of cabs around the city, too. What do you think about that?
MM: I actually just got back to New York the other day and every time I get into a cab I'm kind of just waiting for it. You can't get too excited about it, though, because what if they just bought like the 4 a.m. time slot ya know?
CM: I hope it doesn't play over and over again like some of those cab ads!
MM: Yeah I hope it doesn't ruin us before people even have a chance to find out about us.
