Out now on Blu-ray is the eerie remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (20th Century Fox). I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of the wonderful actor Kevin McCarthy, who starred in the original 1956 version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, so it was sweet to see him make a guest appearance in this newly re-released 1978 remake directed by Philip Kaufman. Set in San Francisco, rather than a small town when strange new plants hurtling from outer space begin to transform the population into an alien race, Kaufman's film holds up well with it's creepy sense of urban paranoia. Donald Sutherland stars as a panicked health official, the lovely Brooke Adams as a woman who thinks her boyfriend is suddenly not her boyfriend, and Leonard Nimoy as a new-wave type psychiatrist. Veronica Cartwright and a very young Jeff Goldblum costar as well and both are terrific as usual. Don Siegel, the director of the original film, also makes a cameo as a suspicious cab driver, and look quick for Robert Duvall dressed as a priest ominously swinging on a playground swing set. The Blu-ray really looks quite good and I liked the film a lot more this time around then when I originally saw it.
