Boy George Presents Postcards From the Edge of My Bed-lam: Lady Gaga's Scratch and Sniff Confession
By Boy George

[From time to time, pop icon Boy George is blogging for PAPERMAG from his bed in London about anything and everything. You can follow him on twitter at @boygeorge]
If Lady Gaga were about to be exposed as a drug user I would understand her recent confession to Vanity Fair that she is an 'occasional' coke sniffer. But why offer up this information on a whim? Could it be that her use of coke is not so "occasional?" As a recovering addict who knows how dangerous "occasional" use is, I can think of no reason for Gaga to reveal this to her young audience. My mum had the best take on this "she's reached the stage where she feels untouchable, you all get there -- you did, son." I can't argue with that! One has to wonder how much of a grip Gaga has on things. Up until now she has seemed almost annoyingly professional and focused and this seems out of character! Isn't saying your an "occasional" drug taker a bit like saying you're bisexual? That usually means you're raving!

She has that cocaine look about her.
That Alexander McQueen look.
Sort of like the darkside.
You, on the otherhand, always looked pretty fun.
Glad you escaped and are writing now.
Gaga isn't a mess yet.
Wow...I remember the days of Leigh Bowery and Troy.
That was greatness.
Gaga is nonsense IMHO

oh dear....George is reading TOO MUCH into a straightforward comment......again! (and again!)........some folk do 'use' occasionally...I dont but it happens!....just like some only have occasional sex......whats the deal?......why not talk about something that MATTERS, George?...like the death of Karen Woo.......

Dear Brett,
I would suppose our amazing Boy George
is writing about Gag Gag, oops, I mean Gaga
because he's a musician and she's a musician.
Well, she's a musician of sorts.
Also, she's touching on a subject that he might
just wonder about.
I never knew anyone who took just a little bit of
the coca, myself.
Cheers

At least Gaga is being honest. What is George suggesting that she lie about her drug use? That's what he did. George many times lied about his own drug use, saying he didn't use when he was in fact was using. I say honesty is always the best policy.
Also, I've been to Gaga's concerts and her audience isn't that young. Her fans are mostly in their twenties and thirties and can make their own decisions and aren't so easily influenced. They aren't young kids or even teenagers.
And it is possible to be bisexual and be attracted to both men and women. I thought George was more open minded. He disrespected the bisexual community. Bisexuals do exist, George!
And I also think there are some people who use cocaine and don't become addicted. It is possible to be a casual user though rare
And why isn't George talking about Gaga's music and not her drug use. Me thinks Mr. George is in desperate need of some column inches since no one pays much attention to him anymore and is using Gaga, the most famous person in the world to get it.
We all know how he went after Madonna for years and years when she was the #1 star. Now he is going after Gaga to get attention.

I have to say it is clear that George isn't judging Ga Ga an knows from personal experience about casual drug use and how it can easily lead to addiction. I would be more concerned if George didn't comment. Surely it shows he cares?
Being honest about your drug use wont make it go away and I fear it could even sensationalize it to young people. No recreational drug use is good news and when it is in the public eye people will inevitably comment on it.
Karen and Bret are clearly loyal Ga Ga fans which is cool but get real guys. The only inches George is looking for is not in columns I am sure. I hope she gets a grip on it soon rather than slide down that slippery slope. Celebrity is a long walk up but a very short fall down.

George, I adore you but I can see this from both sides of the argument...
I gave up smoking in 2001, after trying to give it up many many times. I was just so addicted that if I stopped for a year an I had just one Id be up to 2 packs in 2 days...
However I am NOT addicted to pot or alcohol and if I had one beer tonight, I might not have one for 10 yrs. Same thing with pot.
There are many many people who can use drugs sparingly and occasionally with no issues...
Sometimes recovering addicts whether it be cigs or pot tend to be PITA reformed ex addicts who think everyone has the same addictions as them... Myself included with cigarettes. Ive been around people who can smoke one cigarette a month and I can be so judgemental to them...
However Im glad you have a heart and are concerned about Gaga. You may be right. she hasnt been looking healthy lately and maybe its the lupus or maybe something else...
I love your music but I love you as a person even more cause you are caring and genuine, please never ever change.
MUAH!

Or it could mean that she will say anything outrageous she can think of to keep attention on herself. She's a fame junkie. Someone should do an intervention.
Posted at 7:12 on Aug 09, 2010
Why should George comment on someone he doesn't know personally? I'm sure when George was on drugs, he resented strangers commenting on him and his drug use. Gaga is unlikely to listen to George since she doesn't really know him. If Gaga has a problem with drugs, the only people she will listen to all her family and her friends, not Boy George.
I just find that Boy George too often comments on other people's issues like with George Michael and Elton John. Boy George should worry about his own career which from what I can see isn't doing too well, and leave everyone else alone.
I think Boy George has talent but he is often a bully who can't listen to any type of criticism. He is much better at giving it then listening. He is known for harsh criticisms of other artists and has been less than caring over the years. Need I mention the time he has spent in jail for handcuffing the escort. Gaga may make mistakes but she doesn't criticize other artists or commit violent crimes against other people.
And Boy George is the ultimate fame junkie who needs an intervention.

Actually, Boy is not attacking Gaga as an artist but commenting on her statement which was shocking! I think he cares and understands what drugs can do and I think Karen's comments are so immature and pointless.

~rolls eyes in amazement~ You people are exactly what gives forums, of any kind, a bad name!!
He was merely making an experienced, and probably all to accurate, observation.
Didn't seem to be attacking, or judging, in ANY WAY! It reads very much like the words of someone who's BEEN THERE, and as a result, is understandably concerned by the 'out of character' confession of a fellow 'artist'. Not to mention the inevitable affect it will have on her fans {of any age!}.
Thanks George, for obviously caring enough to put pen to paper in the first place! Not everyone immediately questions your motives!! {unfortunately, those are the 1st to send a 'comment' your way!!} xx

BOY GEORGE AND LADY GAGA BOTH KNOW EACH OTHER, GEORGE SIGN GAGS HAT AND SHE WAS INFLUENCED BY GEOPRGE GROWING UP.

I think the essence of this Gaga Postcard lies on the risk to say or even believe in being "occasional" in some behaviors and uses.
I hope Lady Gaga takes care and gives her Fans a lot of new great Music.
She s an interesting artist and is able to sing very well. I would love to get an stripped down Piano Album of her.
My favs are Speechless / Alejandro / Eh Eh nothing else to say in the PSB Remix.
At first I did not like her (I still dont like her Hit Records like Poker Face) and was annoyed about the label "the new Mad♥nna" - but it was impossible to not like her at the end. And she s not "the new Madonna" but great so far.
Posted at 10:34 on Aug 10, 2010
Well, maybe she just wants people to know who she really is. She wants to peel off that layer of unreality that often accompanies fame and say "Hey, I'm just human".

Boy George are right!
Boy George is part of a generation where we still needed to be and just have not ... A generation where artists were themselves ...
A generation that artists thought and felt.
Today they are products of businessmen..

You know, I've been a fan since you first came on the scene, but the second to last sentence was the end for me. I'm bisexual. I don't have a preference for men or women: I am attracted to and fall in love with human beings and gender is not a factor for me. Raving? Raving mad now, yes. Thank you for discriminating against your queer sister over here. Way to support your community.

Dude, watch your Kurt Loder interview from 1987.
Type in 'Boy George Interview' into google or youtube and it fills in 'HIGH' and 'ON DRUGS' for the user...
Just shut up.
Posted at 6:13 on Aug 11, 2010
Bi-sexual people are NOT raving. Why would you say something like that?
Posted at 12:28 on Aug 12, 2010
I totally agree, she's too much its coming off the wrong way of course her fans think she is Holy and can do no wrong. I appreciate u having the guts to state your opinion to the public.
I respect you as a artist more than a lot of the pop artist now days.

Me thinks the Boy doth protest too much. Or, to paraphrase something Joan Rivers once said: "I'd like to see how clean your kitchen is, honey."

Lady Gaga just admitted to Vanity Fair she is using cocaine maybe twice a year. The sad part is that her 'little monsters' think it is normal because she is a rock star. Since when is cocaine use legal? If it were Lindsay Lohan saying she used cocaine it would be an outrage but with Gaga it is not shocking at all.
Posted at 3:18 on Aug 15, 2010
there's real talent under all that craziness. But will she succumb to her craziness and become a walking talking mess or will she grow up and be a talented star?? Time to chose Lady Gaga -- crazy or star.
Posted at 6:03 on Aug 15, 2010
I thought Lady Gaga's comments about her drug use (I am assuming you are referring to her Vanity Fair Interview.), were in reference to her past downfall, with drugs. I did not think she was talking about any recent problems with drugs or any casual use of drugs.
Maybe I am wrong.

ok, george and I have done some shit in OUR day. Now that a queen is on top, george did call it!!! however, we have all(in various ways,) starved for our ART.... Gaga is in that time frame, and George is my age. i am not an addict, and George is now well-intentioned, but house-bound.
Gaga will either die, or not, but in the meantime, her shit is blown up fatter than shit at a kid's birthday party.
How do i talk to youngsters? Here goes: George was cool in my day and i am older, but whatever. GAGA is either in control, or NOT, but whatever he says in his response to her interview, is not that relevant~ INDEED- she may die of a drug overdose, or she may be like Madonna, and live through shit, and become a Cultural Icon.
In the immortal words of the Ghetto Boys: You gotta let a Ho be a Ho~
let gaga do what/whom she wants... let her smoke crack, blow a racehorse, detail a car, who cares...? just let a bitch do what she wants without the whole world responding.
Even Brittany lost her collective mind with all the attention...

This is why I have I problem with Boy George. Yes, sometimes he has some good points but he expresses himself the wrong way. He doesn't talk like he's concerned about Gaga, but expresses himself in a bitchy sarcastic way taking unnecessary swings at people. The last sentence about bisexuals really undermined the compassionate thing he was trying to put out about Gaga and drugs.
Also, George complains about people taking his bitchy comments out of context, but he took Gaga's comments out of context. Yes, she admitted she used coke a few times a year, but in the next sentence she said she wanted her fans to know that you don't have to do that to be great and it's not a good thing to do. So it's not like she's encouraging her fans to do drugs. But George left out the second part of what she said. Instead he sensationalized things to get attention.
And she didn't do it on a whim. She just answered a question honestly that she was asked. Why people turned against George was not that he used drugs, but he preached against them and said he didn't use them, but was in fact using them. People have compassion for drug users and addicts but they always hate liars and hypocrites.

I am reminded of Sri Daya Mata's comment, "You should smoke the smoke, the smoke should NOT smoke YOU."
Gaga is playing with fire....

Word. Always multiply. Perhaps the decline of her strategicly routed rise aka "Empire" is a barometer for us all "speeding twards rock bottom" to be reunited with sanity soon.

At first I was quite put out by the last two sentences, but re-reading this article has made me think that the last comment may have been in refrence to himself. In the past, he has said he was bisexual, when, in fact, he was not. So, perhaps this was more about himself then bisexuals in general. As for the rest of the article, I think he was speaking about it because of his own experiences with drugs and how HIS "occasional" use became addiction and he doesn't feel it necessary that she meantion she does/did coke because her fans could be easily influenced by what she says and think it's ok just because she did it. I see his point. You do have to be careful what you say in the eye of the public. Things can easily be taken the wrong way.
That being said, I LOVE Boy George and I think Lady Gaga is talented in her own way. I wish them both the best.:)
