Word of Mouth
Art house theater reRun, which opens tonight in Brooklyn, is a movie theater slash bar slash eatery connected to DUMBO favorite reBar. The space boasts 60-some seats rescued from discarded minivans, reBar's signature roster of craft beers and organic wines, and gourmet bites from the snack bar (would you prefer a duck confit hot dog with cherry mustard or popcorn buttered with bacon fat?). PAPERMAG caught up with the man behind the movie magic, founder Jason Stevens, to learn more about reRun.

What sort of vibe are you hoping to create at reRun?

The whole scene surrounding reRun should be as much fun as the movies themselves, or more. We're gonna open up the theater's bar early before each show -- we can't serve during the movie due to liquor laws -- and serve right after, too, leaving plenty of time for people to mix and mingle. There will be also live DJs and kitschy drive-in themed drinks.

Rom-com Audrey the Trainwreck screens on opening night. What other kind of films will reRun screen?

I wanted new independent films that don't have national distribution. I wan to take films out of the festivals like South by Southwest, Cannes, Sundance, films that don't have a home, and give them their first New York run.

Aaron Hillis, the editor of GreenCine and VP of Benten Films, is reRun's curator. How did you start working with him?

That was kind of serendipitous. I had been talking to somebody about the idea, and he was like, "You should really talk to Aaron Hillis, that guy knows everything about movies!" So I called Aaron, and he was dropping so many movie references into his normal conversation that I couldn't even identify if it was a noun or a verb - stuff that was so esoteric my mind was exploding. I was like, "Okay, sure, absolutely, it is just like when the vampire queen sucked all the blood out of John Wayne. No, I remember that movie, of course. Whatever, you're the right guy, you're hired."

reRun Theater, 147 Front St., DUMBO, Brooklyn, (718) 797-2322. 6:30 P.M. $10.
